I just popped down to our phrmacy to get some 'bazuka' for dp as he has what I suspect are verrucas.
I was told they cannot sell it to me as I am pregnant, and rules apply to it, as if selling excessive amounts of paracetemol, etc.
they told me they couldnt trust it wasn't for my own use, and so should send dp.
it's not too much of a problem as it's literally two minutes way from us, but I was quite shcked ny this as I have picked up ibuprofen, cough syrup etc whilst obviously pregnant and no one had said a thing.

How rude! You should have told em that you were just fat

kid · 13/09/2005 17:05

I recently needed some for DD who is 6. It doesn't state on the tube if a child of that age can use it so they wouldn't sell it to me until the pharmacist came back from lunch and could confirm if it was suitable for DD.

Seems a bit mad doesn't it!

starlover · 13/09/2005 17:07

oh it's to do with feet though.... like you aren;'t supposed to use those foot spas..
it isn't just a blanket ban on ALL medication! lol

BadHair · 13/09/2005 17:19

The ban is because it hasn't been tested on pregnant women so they can't guarantee it's safe, so cover their backs by not selling it to you.

A couple of years ago my mum tried to buy two packets of aspirin at the same time, and the chemist refused to sell them as combined they would have been a lethal dose. So she bought one from him then nipped across the road to the Spa and bought another pack. She waved them both merrily at him as she walked back to the car.

Just incidentally, there's a non-branded verruca treatment that's name escapes me but it starts with C and you have to ask the chemist for it. It's £2 cheaper than Bazooka, has the same active ingredients, but is much better. I'm using it on a corn at the mo and it's working a treat.

flamesparrow · 13/09/2005 17:22

You can't take immodium while pregnant, but you can still buy it.

magnolia1 · 13/09/2005 19:43

I remember buying a huge bottle of cod liver oil when heavily pregnant not for me I have to add but the chemist didn't bat an eyelid!!

titchy · 14/09/2005 14:28

I'm sorry that's ridiculous! what sort of nanny state do we live in where pharmacists don't trust you to use treatments apporopriately so refuse to serve you. If they're for someone else then the pharmacist should trust you and sell you the stuff. I'd complain big time!

Shades1 · 14/09/2005 16:13

add mouthwash to the list, not tested on children under 6 so can't let my 5.4 year old use it - even thought it would have helped with tooth decay and might have prevented the 4 extractions he's just had

Mum2girls · 14/09/2005 16:16

I find the assistants at Boots (both male and female) to be dragons - an interrogation with every purchase.

suedonim · 14/09/2005 16:31

Pharmacists and assistants have no choice but to ask questions when selling medicines, it's part of their protocol. You'd be surprised at the silly things people do with medicines, honestly! I know and you know that you're competent but unless you're well known to them the pharmacist isn't able to make that assummption. If he/she did and something went wrong everyone would condemn them and they'd be for the high jump. Btw, deaths from overdosing on painkillers have fallen by a quarter since the pack size was restricted, so, mad as they seem, the rules are saving lives.

flamesparrow · 14/09/2005 17:36

M2G - I had fun with one at Boots!

I asked if I could take immodium whilst pregnant. She said no. She then went on to tell me that ginger and travel sickness bands would help. I was a bit baffled at how they would stop me pooing, like the immodium would, but just nodded and played along. She then took my immodium out of my hand and walked off with them

I was trying to buy them for DH at the time! I was only asking out of interest incase I got the bug too!!!

She did hand them over in the end, but gave me very stroppy looks.

MrsBubsDeVere · 14/09/2005 17:41

I can remember our boots had an offer of 3 for 2 on both lemsip and calpol, when we tried to buy 3 of each (so we have them in if needed) they wouldn't let us, so, if you can't buy three whats the bloomin use of having them on a 3 for 2.

babyonboard · 15/09/2005 08:44

it is crazy...what on earth would I do with the stuff..and why would I buy it for myself knowing it's not reccomended for pregnant women?...grr...
they interrogated dp too..aksed all sorts of questions.
