Blood Sugar...

I had a sandwich and a diet coke at about 12.20, at 3 o'clock I tested my blood sugar on a friends monitor and it was 10.8. Am I right in thinking that's quite high? Is it likely to be diabetes or does something else raise it? Or could it just be normal after having a coke a few hours before? A bit worried as I have been weeing a lot lately... But no other symptoms of anything!

I would think that is the high side of normal.

There is no sugar in diet coke.

That is higher than it should be, although not immediately dangerous or anything. You should go and talk to the doctor about it.

Did you wash your hands before you took the blood. Residue on your fingers can cause the reading to be high.Apparently newsprint can cause faulty readings. My husband tested himself on my mum's machine recently and was shocked to get a reading of 13. He washed his hands and the next 3 tests said 5.

Yes, Paddy hands were freshly washed and dried on a clean teatowel. Will see the Dr as soon as I can get an apt!

Well don't panic, even if it turns out you do have diabetes it is not the end of the world (speaking as a type 1 diabetic myself!) It would be most likely to be type 2 diabetes which may be able to be treated by adjustment to diet, losing weight if you are overweight, or medication. Insulin injections would be a last resort.

Infections etc can sometimes cause higher than normal readings, or the test strips may have been out-of-date, the meter not working correctly...

Diabetes cannot be diagnosed with one high reading so you will be given more tests, maybe even a meter to monitor yourself for a bit.

Good luck, diabetes is at most dangerous if it is undiagnosed so you are doing the right thing to get checked out.

Thanks Dilbertina, I've had a sample from my arm and a urine sample taken, and am waiting to hear back from the Drs, I'm pretty certain the monitor of my friends was ok as her strips were new, monitor was newish and she did her own as did another friend, theirs were 4 point something for the non diabetic and 6 point something for my diabetic friend. Bit confused as I literally don't 'tick' a single risk factor for type 2/prediabetes e.g. I'm young (ish), white, BMI of 19.6, waist measurement of 25inches, not gestational diabetes with any of my children, no PCOS and no family history of any diabetes! But I suppose diabetes is FAR preferable to some of the other nasties google has suggested!
