I have just done this, and took my last pill on friday. But I feel like I have the mother of all periods coming. Just so I don't freak out, should I expect this to be quite heavy? I really do feel quite unwell, and I assume that this is why. Just need to be prepared, as I am starting a new regime of swimming this week, and don't fancy an accident in the pool Any help would be great,
Thanks
LL x

i did this a couple of times years ago and didn't have a particularly heavy period afterwards.

also i remember reading (in Jackie) that you don't "leak" in swimming pools - something about the cold water making the muscles contract. never tested it though.

I do this quite often and don't find my periods any heavier - though I do sometimes get a bit of breakthrough bleeding (nothing major though).

I heard you don't 'leak' in water, full stop. But when i think about it, i always have a bath when i've got period pain, and never get any accidents. But if you do have a heavy one, just be careful getting out of the pool. Could get a bit messy...

Hmm someone should tell that to my dd, she's developed a nasty habit of pooing as soon as we step in! Thanks for the reassurance though

Oh, I should probably be changing my name for this .

I usually go swimming whether I have my period or not (use tampons) but last time I went swimming during my period (it had just started and was heavy but I had promised) when I came out the pool and was standing in the changingrooms getting DS2 organised, walking back and forth to the lockers I looked down at the floor to see diluted (with swimming pool water) blood on the floor. Was mortified and mopped it up immediately with a towel (the changingroom assistant at our local pool is fantastic, she just seems to constantly mop the floor and a minute or two later she was mopping that area).

I don't think anything was untoward in the pool and I've never had that happen before but will think twice about going swimming when my period has just started again.

littlelamb · 12/09/2005 22:05

if you think thats bad, a lump of said poo fell out of dd's nappy when we were showering on saturday. Mortified is not the word. I actually had to pick it up and put it in the bin Time to haul out some industrial strength swim nappies...

I used to run three or four packets together all the time and only had three or four periods a year. My periods were not heavy.

littlelamb · 13/09/2005 13:49

Just a quick thank you to everyone who replied yesterday. Turns out the imminent period feeling was a nasty bout of food poisoning But much better now, and off swimming, (but not in maroon), tomorrow!

The 'period' that you have when you take the combined oral contraceptive isn't a 'real' period, it is a break through bleed. The lining of the wall builds up when you go through a normal cycle, when you don't ovulate,( which you don't on the COC), you don't get the build up. So there is nothing extra to be lost of you run two packs together, you will just get your normal withdrawal bleed.

This is also why your periods tend to be lighter when you are on the COC.
