Talk to me about thinning hair

Does that product recommended by that ex royal correspondent woman Jenny (something) really work? I don't look bald - yet - but my hair seems to be thinning. Always a load on my hands on the shower - almost like post pregnancy hair loss. My youngest is 5 though.

Oh marge I started a thread about this just last week as I'd blocked both the shower and the bath drains with my falling out hair.

My youngest is 5 too. Sorry don't have any answers just wanted you to know you are not alone.

What's the stuff that's recommended then>

Hi there Lapin, It's a bugger isn't it??

The stuff is called Viviscal, and from all the press releases it sounds like a miracle cure, but then they are flogging the stuff aren't they. It's not cheap either so I am a bit Hmm.

I just wanted to know if anyone has tried it and whether it actually lives up to it's reputation.

Have you lost weight recently? I have and my hair has been falling out like nobody's business.
So I have been on Boots hair, skin and nails vitamins for a month.
It seems (possibly) to be slowing up a bit now, but whether that's the vitamins or my bodyreadjusting to weight loss I don't know.

hi mine is thinning too lots coming out when washing it, i also seem to be leaving a thin trail around the house too.

i went to the GP and was refered to a specialist who said that it was because my ferritin (iron store) level is low even thought it was in the normal range??? i was on iron tablets but have had to stop taking them as i am now pregnant. my hair is still falling out, just hope that i wont be bald by the time baby is here!!

might be worth a trip to the GP as there are a few things that can cause it to happen.

Get a blood test to make sure it's not any deficiency. Does it run in the family? Sometimes when your hair is longer than usual it just seems like there is more coming out.

Mine is just buggering-bastarding-alopecia. Minoxydil is another one on the market.

Hmmmm - Well I have lost stone recently doing weightwatchers. I have another 1/2 a stone to go. I eat pretty healthily though so I don't think I should be lacking anything' I have been worried about certain things recently, but then there is ALWAYS something to worry about isn't there.

My Mum has pretty fine hair too. As a family we do have totallly thin and pathetic hair. My brothers and lot of male cousins went bald in their twenties and have just shaved the lot off.

I think I might see the GP. Just wondered if any of the off the shelf products actually do anything?

I reckon it's the weight loss. Seems to be a regular side effect! According to my extensive googling it will sort itself out in a few months, but why not take a supplement anyway?

wahwahwah · 20/10/2010 16:15

I used to have quite thick hair, then it started getting thinner. My mum had fine hair and grandpa was bold as a coot! Of course my dad had a fine head of thick, black hair when he was 72 (and he didnt dye it either as it grew back exactly the same after chemo).

Genetics sucks sometimes!

If it's weight loss, will it stop when I stop losing weight - or do I have to put the weight back on again?? I'd rather be thin haired than fat again.

I think if it's due to weight loss, that it's a question of waiting for your body to adapt and stop panicking, rather than having to put the weight back on.

Chinghehuang · 21/10/2010 16:15

Could be lack of Iron, Vit B, Folic Acid,Zinc, my derm said that Viviscal was a waste of money, company I use is Cytoplan for my supplements, suitable for vegetarians and tablets are food state which means they are'nt bulked up like some shop bought vitamins & minerals.
