Diarrhea (yuk)

I have had travellers' diarrhea now for 6 days, with vomitting and fever on day one. Haven't taken any imodium as I thought it's best to let it out, and am holed up in the ILs' house so nothing to do as such...but should I if it doesn't clear up? I'm flying on tuesday and work on weds. Gaaaaah.

Imodium. If you've had it for that long then anything's worth a go tbh!

You need to pop a sample into your GP as it's been going on for too long. Make sure to take some diaralite/oral rehydration solution to replace the electrolytes that you will have lost. Don't take any imodium until the sample results have come back, in certain cases it's better out then in. You are best off getting it checked just incase it's ecoli/bug that needs treating.

belle's right, you shouldn't really take imodium. I just know I wouldn't be able to go that long with your symptoms.

Could you call your GP surgery and explain that you don't want to go down with symptoms but have a telephone consult?

After all this time you should really see a doctor but take the imodium in the meantime. I was told by a doctor that you don't need to keep having diarrhea to get rid of the infection since that is probably gone in the first couple of bowel movements - the rest of the time the diarrhea is due to irritation of the digestive tract. Don't know if that is always true but I would suspect that after 6 days it might be case for you.

Hope you are drinking plenty to avoid dehydration and keep food simple as you would for a child.

Thanks folks
I gave in last night and started in imodium. I'm still abroad so can't see my GP but if I'm still iffy on weds morning I will. Have barely left the house and eaten only bread, rice and potatoes (boring) and drunk gallons of water. Despite taking imodium from last night I still have it this morning but no stomach cramps as yet. It's a bloody good job this wasn't a proper holiday anyway or I'd be well pissed off. As it is I'm hoping I might have dropped a couple of lbs....(shallow)

GP might be wise if it still hasn't cleared up by Wednesday - it shouldn't go on that long!

Hope you feel better soon and have lost weight as compensation. No harm in looking on the bright side! Smile

Niecie I heard/read that too (about not needing to keep getting rid of any infection via the diarrhoea). However I think I read it on an advert for Imodium or similar so did wonder if it was true. (perhaps someone on here could clarify/confirm)

You know those adverts, where the person has severe diarrhoea but must go on a shopping spree Hmm so the magic imodium solves their problem. (pity it doesn't help those around them as they are potentially spreading the infection, but mentioning that might harm the imodium sales!)
