Sorry to hear it aimsmum. It took my dh months to improve after he hurt his ligaments so prepare yourself for a long haul. Can you draft in extra help?

starlover · 11/09/2005 20:58

well i can't give you an exact time range... BUT..the more you rest the quicke it will heal!

is there no chance of taking a little bit of time off work to rest it at all?

piffle · 11/09/2005 21:01

Arnica Gel and tablets, really aid healing, I had a tennis injury spraing my ankle and it speeded up recovery time muchly!
I was on crutches for 10 days and walking/hobbling for a week then back in shoes and doing moderate normal activity BUT REST in the first 2 weeks are VITAL for quick healing

it depends how damaged they are....I have damaged ligaments which took about a month ish to weight bear but when i tore ankle ligaments they took AGES to feel comfy again and still aches now in the cold.

As has already been explained LOTS of rest and elevation will help with healing and reducing swelling. Arnica is faberoony and after a week or 2 MILD excerise. They shoukld have given u a booklet at hosp for those.

ooo dont know personally but my mum tore her ligaments ended up having an operation and being in a cast all the way up to her hip (tore them in her knee) for 8 months she had to learn how to walk again as she had no use of her leg.

bet ur glad that didnt happen

think it can take a few weeks for it to totally heal

I've done the ligaments in both my feet, the most recent injury being early December last year. I still get considerable pain now, 9/10 months on. I've been told that it's likely that I'll never be pain free. It does get easier but it flares up when the weather cools down or the rain comes, a bit like arthritis in that respect.

stacijc · 11/09/2005 21:14

thats horrible!!!!

what part of ur foot is it?
trying to remember excersices

LIZS · 11/09/2005 21:15

Has the bruising started to subside yet? Arnica will really help with that if not. Also if it is still swollen allow at least a week for it to go down and even then it could well swell up readily if you over do it. Agree with SL - the more you rest the quicker you heal.

You'll probably feel more comfortable wearing elastic bandage for a couple of weeks yet as once the joint becomes more mobile again it could still feel a bit stiff and awkward to weight bear.

What sort of holiday is it ? Can you take a book and sit whilst dd plays or is it more active ?

oh and agree you do get after effects longterm both in terms of it never feeling quite right and being susceptible to doing it again.

The shoe thing was about 10 days, I kind of hobbled about wincing in the interim . Driving was a nightmare what with the bending of the feet on the pedals and all. I'd say it took me about 6 weeks before I could drive without it bringing a tear to my eye, and without being on horse tranquilizer style painkillers !

The swelling took AGES to go down, that's the reason I couldn't get a shoe on. I was amazed at how long it stuck around. My foot would balloon up if I didn't keep it elevated.
