Question for those with underactive thyroid

ilovespinach · 11/10/2010 20:50

I've got a borderline underactive thyroid - last TSH was 3.9. I'm suffering from hairloss, weight gain, difficulty in thinking properly about anything, tiredness. etc

When I first started to take Levothyroxin last year at 25g I felt great, the dr then increased to 50 and I felt great. My TSH level then went up though after a miscarriage and I felt awful again. I have been taking 75 for a few weeks.

I don't feel any bettér. I've noticed I have a big afternoon dip and feel the tiredness at its peak in the afternoon to the extent where I keep falling asleep when looking after the dcs. Is this usual? Is there anything I can do to stop this dip?

thanks

With a TSH of 3.9 I wouldn't feel great

I prefer mine under 1

They now recommend under 2 for successful pg

Are you due another test soon?

thanks for the reply...

The last test was a couple of weeks ago....just thought I would start to feel better with the increased dose.

Do you also have a real low point in the day with tiredness?

Yes I do get that low point in the afternoon too (am on 125mg thyroxine daily).

Have you had your ferritin (iron stores)checked as well?

I have low ferritin (common among hypothyroid patients) and can't help wondering if this is the culprit.

You need to be between 0 and 2 really.

ilovespinach · 12/10/2010 10:08

All other vits and iron are ok. Maybe I just need to give more time for the new dose to kick in :)

Can't remember the title - and the book is in a box in the cellar waiting for me to have enough energy to unpack it. Anyway, one of the many books I read said that according to research done in the US you need 1 microgramme of thyroxine for every pound of body weight.

That means if your normal weight would be about 10 stone you need 140 mcg per day - probably 150 mcg.

I felt better too, after I started on a mixture of thyroxine and l-iodothyronine ie T3 as well as T4.
