Looking for reassurance... DD (19 months) was just knocked flying by a swing with child in it. Didn't knock her out and she was crying immediately but it was a very powerful blow, picked her off her feet totally, and she has a big bump on her eyebrow. Applied ice pack and she's had a drink of water and talked to me coherently and is now sleeping - have checked and her breathing sounds normal. Any other checks I should do that she's ok?

Excessive drowsiness or vomitting

The temple area is more susceptible than other areas

I'm a wimp so would probably be tempted to have her checked out

northerndad · 10/09/2005 13:06

first instinct would be DONT let her sleep. get proper advice or get her checked

Twiglett · 10/09/2005 13:06

crying and bumps a good sign

being out of it, sleepy (when not supposed to) vomiting all signs

sounds like she's fine

relax

swiperfox · 10/09/2005 13:07

Ring the nhs line to be 100% sure.

You've done the right thing though. How long after the bump did she fall asleep? While she is asleep, check her every 10 minutes or so. Check her nose and ears for any fluid. They might ask you to wake her up.... not 100% sure.

Poor little thing!

I was hit by a swing when I was a toddler. They tried to give me a catscan but it was impossible as I was wiggling too much. All they could do was observe me (like you are doing).
Keep checking in on her. If she seems at all odd I would contact a doctor to be on the safe side.

KateF · 10/09/2005 13:10

Observe her closely for the next 24 hours. Any vomiting, blurred vision, excessive drowsiness or persistent headache needs checking out. Pop her up to A&E if you're worried, (I used to be a doctor btw)

Twiglett · 10/09/2005 13:13

why 'used to be'?

pesha · 10/09/2005 13:14

i THINK LETTONG THEM SLEEP IF THEY WANT TO IS FINE AS LONG AS YOU KEEP CHECKING BUT I WOULD RING NHS DIRECT JUST TO BE SURE, (whoops!) im always ringing nhs about my 2, just for reassurance that i am doing the right thing.

WideWebWitch · 10/09/2005 13:14

Agree with Twig, I wouldn't be worried as a) she cried and b) wasn't knocked out and c) no vomiting and d) coherent and e) presumably this is usual sleeping time? so she's not sleep as a result of it, she would normally be anyway.

Twigglett - qualified doctor, worked in NHS for 2 yrs. Suffered severe episode of depression and advised to take a year off work so found a voluntary job doing health information program for development charity. Absolutely loved it and was made permanent so never went back to clinical practice. Then had dd1 and had to give up said wonderful job!

Thanks all. DD up and about now, has had a bit of lunch (and calpol) and now playing with her baby doll. Seems fine. Hate it when these things happen at the weekend though when health centre closed.

Also, learned today that 8 month pregnant mum cannot put on spurt of speed to save toddler!!

Hi, have had many trips to A&E with two toddlers, advice is very similar to others, keep watching for 48 hours, watch for clear liquid from nose and ears, and when asleep just pinch her ear gently to see if she responds, doesn't have to wake up but is o.k. if responds to this.

cheers for sharing Kate .. I'm a nosy old goat aren't I?

hello im a new member. glad ur dd seems ok. my ds fell off his changing unit when he was about 10mo. took him to hospital, doc said bruising at front of head is best place, as head is softer there. but said to keep a check on him for 24-36 hours, and watch out for vomiting, tiredness clumliness, and keep check on eyes to make sure focusing. hope that helps some.
