Whole body itching - but no rash

Help - this is driving me crazy!
For the last 4 weeks I have been itching all over my body. There are some small red bumps after I have scratched the area, but other than that there is no rash. When it is really bad there are stabbing pains in the itchiest areas(feels like prickly heat), and the more I scratch the worse it is.
I haven't used different detergents, eaten new foods etc, can't think what it could be...? Has reduced me to tears tonight, I just want to rake my skin off, because the pain is not as bad as the itching...AGH!
Any ideas?

I think you need to see a dr asap to rule out a liver problem. All over itching with no rash can be a sign of this.

I was exactly like this when pregnant (the last few months). It is very important to see the GP asap - it could be liver problems, or some sort of allergy (mine wasn't, just hormones, but needed ruling out).

Its really, really horrible and very tiring - you have all my sympathy.

Let us know what the doc says!

What the others have said - really important to get this checked out.

On the flip side, while I had Obstetric Cholestasis in pregnancy (which was liver/hormone related), I still get similar now but more as an expression of general allergies (I have a dust mite allergy). When I started to manage the allergies better with prescription anti-allergy and antihistamines, the itching also went away. So it could well be something minor but still very irritating.

Thanks all, have taken anti-histamines over the weekend which have made no difference, so I'll try to get a GP appointment tomorrow - Monday though, so don't hold out much hope!
