Gall stones and a new pain

mummynumnum · 09/10/2010 17:57

I Discovered I had gallstones after having several attacks after having dc2. Subsided and have delayed having operation to remove it. In the last week I have had a constant pain under right rib, round back and down stomach. Not an attack pain but like I have been kicked in ribs and back. Has anyone who has had gallnstones experienced this?

Any thoughts?

Sorry to hear you have gallstones probs.

I didn't have large stones but sludge and small stones. I had keyhole surgery to remove the gallbladder and also another procedure to remove an obstruction along my biliary tract. I can remember the episodes of severe pain but approaching surgery I can remember just generally yuk and uncomfortable (probably due to the final obstruction). This was all 13 years ago so my memory is hazy.

The dull pain you have might be stones that are lodged. Do you feel sick or nauseated or unwell with the discomfort? I think you should seek further medical advice just to be safe.

Hope this helps.

I don't feel sick at the mo. I do when I have attacks. I just feel very sore at the mo. All under ribs, round back and even down right side and down leg. Even have strange feeling in right arm and hand. All v strange. Will go to gp tomorrow. Worst pain is right under right rib cage. Almost like I have a golf ball stuck under there.

I am sitting in bed recovering from my surgery, I had my gall bladder removed on Friday.

It sound like you have a stone lodged. This can cause serious complications if left untreated You need to see your Dr asap.

I am only two days post op and feel so much better already.

Hope you feel better soon.

mummynumnum · 10/10/2010 21:00

Yes think it is getting worse so will try and get appt for after work tomorrow. Have just gone back to work after mat leave and was trying to delay op as after v bad period after gave birth with attacks, it settled, but dont like this feeling and don't want to push my luck.

Hope you're ok, mummynumnum.

mummynumnum · 11/10/2010 21:46

Been re-referred today so hopefully will get hosp appt soon. Right side going all numb and tingly and feels like knee going to give way. Assume it is connected to gall bladder as all on that side.

Wonder if it will take long to have the op?? Strangest thing is the pain in my wrist. Sure it is something to do with gallstones and nerves as all down right side, but wrist is so painful and tingly.

If you feel much worse, mnn, do think of going to A & E. I don't want to scare you but I had an unpleasant and dangerous episode with a stone which blocked the duct and caused an infection. I didn't have the symptoms you describe though - just very intense gall bladder pain. But you do need to be a bt careful with gallstones

mummynumnum · 13/10/2010 20:37

Yes I am tempted to go back to GP as I am q worried as have pain all down arm and is tingly and hand is very sore and radiates down leg as well and is all down right side. assume it is gallbladder prob as pain under rib as well.

mummynumnum - what you have described are classic gall stone pains and will only get worse. Have you had pain in the right shoulder blade yet? That is the next stage, until you have a biliary colic attack when a stone blocks the duct - which is agony.

GPs seem to take the view that this can all be managed with pain relief. Believe me, it cannot be managed with anything but morphine in the end. I have never felt such pain.

My mother was fobbed off for two years with similar pains. You must push hard to get in front of a consltant and have the operation done. It will not get better. It will get worse.

Until you get the op, do not eat fat and no alcoholic drink and only very very light meals. My first biliary attack was after a lasagne and half a bottle of red wine.

I developed gall bladder attacks where they came on and had intense pain and vomiting. Develoepd this after birth of 2nd child. Referred to hosp, had scan, gallstones confirmed. Saw consultant were not very sympathetic re doing op whilst breastfeeding and I wanted to continue bf. As attacks subsided, I put op on hold and was referred back to GP and told to come back for op when ready. I am not experiencing the sudden attack. This is a constant pain under right rib and in shoulder blade and spreading down arm and leg with tingly feeling which is the weird part. GP has referred me back to the hosp and said gall stones prob causing the pain. I would wait for appt but concerned that this constant and new pain is a sign that something has worsened, so tempted to go to A and e

you should go to A&E.

definitely.

mummytosquidgies · 14/10/2010 16:03

Please go to your Dr, I've only just come home from being in hospital for a week thanks to complications of gallstones.

I had pain similar to yours after an attack, but then I started going yellow. Turned out to be a stone stuck in the bile duct, and I had an ERCP last week to remove it, and thanks to that, pancreatitis, which can be fatal.

I'm currently waiting for the appointment to come through to have the gallbladder removed- I too am breastfeeding 8 week old DS, pancreatitis without strong painkillers wasn't fun at all, but I wanted to continue breastfeeding so refused morphine.

Hope you get it sorted and feel better soon.

mummynumnum · 14/10/2010 21:44

Gonna get docs appt tomorrow. Ache in rib and back better but arm and hand on right side is in agony.

pain under ribs should always be investigated quickly as it can be serious. one sided tingling/pain should also be urgently looked at. could just be muscular causing nerve irritation but it could also easily be something more sinister... i still think at least seeing or speaking to an out of hours health care professional would be a good idea. A&E is another option.

kuckingfunt · 15/10/2010 21:47

I have been to the docs today with similar pain. I am getting pain under my right ribs and also down my right side and lower back. I dont have it all the time but when I do it is really uncomfortable. I also haven't noticed it follows after certain foods either really.

GP has referred me for a scan to see what it is - he suspects gallstones. I am not sure if it is or if my symptoms are like the early stages of it, but suppose I will find out after the scan.

I hope you appointment comes through soon and you are feeling better. How did you get on at the docs today?

alypaly · 16/10/2010 00:28

i was told by my gp not to have morphine for gall stone pain as it can cause the spincter of oddi to go into spasm which can make the pain worse. My Gp gave me pethidine which is recommende for gall stone pain

lucykate · 16/10/2010 01:17

dh is waiting to have his gallbladder removed and has been given 2 prescriptions to keep him going while he's waiting. dihydrocodine tablets for the pain (they are 500mg of paracetamol and 10mg of dihydrocodine, the nearest over the counter equivalent is paramol) and omeprazole to reduce acidity (zanprol is the over the counter version). these do help keep it under control, although he did have a bad attack last saturday night.

alypaly · 16/10/2010 01:21

hi lucy....my consultant GI wouldnt give codeine for the same reasons as morphine as they belong to the same group of medicines.

lucykate · 16/10/2010 10:13

he's not been told about that but will check next time he goes to the gp. i'm not happy him being on all these tablets long term, the op would be the better solution but we've no idea how long the waiting list is.

mummynumnum · 16/10/2010 21:48

My pain has thankfully subsided today but glad I got referral back to hosp as I think the time has come to get on that waiting list
