I've been to the docs about meds and they took some bloods as I'm new to that surgery having moved. My cholestrol is 4.9 and they say they'd like it under 4. Everything else is fine although I'm a bit overweight. My bmi is 26.something?? Not sure how bad that is tbh?

I've started on skimmed milk and am eating more fruit although I do eat a lot of veg anyway. Plus we usually cook from scratch.

Does anyone else have problems with cholestrol and if so what do you do?

thanks for replies, yes I don't think he's excessivley worried just there's a lot of heart disease in my family and my dad died young (heart related) but I also want to keep it in check as don't want it to rise.

Mine was 6.4 3 years ago and they told me that was fine Shock

Am having it retested next week, really not looking forward to the results Sad

peterW · 10/10/2010 16:58

if your cholesterol is below 5.2 your absolutely fine as for your bmi its not an accurate way of measuring things it never has been, porridge every morning will drop it considerably and eating 5 or 6 small meals a day burns of more calories than if you only eat 3 large meals a day

Curlylox · 10/10/2010 17:13

I love porridge but porridge doesn't love me I'm afraid. Always thought it was the milk, so used all different types of milk then eventually tried it with water, still had the same effect........really bad wind, the noises my stomach made all very embarrassing Blush Any alternatives to porridge to help reduce cholesterol please?

peterW · 10/10/2010 17:17

i know what your saying but its the best thing 50gram s is all you need each morning or try a high protein low carb diet

Curiousmama · 10/10/2010 22:12

Was amazed smoking raises cholesterol. I only had the odd one but now none at all.

Curlylox have you tried the finer porridge? Pawridge is good. I have mine with skimmed milk and no sugar.

I didn't realise that LD? They did a full blood count for me so think it's ok?

Curiousmama - you would have had to have had a thyroid function test separately from a full blood count to check your thyroid.

smoking is a highly damaging pasttime - causes cellular damage in the body; cholesterol is the tissue glue that is sent out on the LDL carrier to mend any damaged tissue. The more damage being done to tissues, the more LDL cholesterol will be in your blood. HDL is the carrier that takes cholesterol back to the liver and out of the bloodstream, which is why it is termed "good" and the LDL "bad" - both completely nonsensical misnomers when it comes to actual physiology - you'd fall apart without them.

I only smoked very occasionally so doubt it'd affect my thyroid? I'll ask but I don't have any symptoms of thyroid problems.

Got the diet sheets and they just say what I already do anyway. Think I need to exercise more as I walk daily but mustn't be enough? There's a gym at the community centre that's not too expensive so think I'll join?

Agree with Fox - mine is way up in the 6s and my surgery is fine with it. I am in my 30's, dont smoke, ok weight etc so with all the factors combined, they say I have zero risk of anything nasty. However, I guess when I am older, I will have to watch it. My mother is on statins to keep hers down to a respectable (in her docs opinion) 5.2 but when she was first diagnosed, she was in the 9s!! People should be aware that if you have an inherited high cholesterol, diet sheets will do v little to amend it. Some people's bodies just function with higher levels. I think they are worrying you unecessarily (altho just my opinion and I am not a medic!)

You might find the NHS webpage useful.

It has information on cholesterol itself and covers a variety of ways to lower it.
