has anyone had their tonsils out as an adult?

i have always suffered from tonsilitus(sp?) and i also get tonsil stones, been to the gp yet again today wth sore throat/fever.

I saw a new gp today who has given me super strenght antibiotics and who was shocked by the apparently massive size of my tonsils - he seems to think i might have an going bacterial infection inside the tonsils and they might need to be removed.

Tbh i am quite happy to get rid of them - but have heard that the recovery from the op is quite nasty - does anyone have any experiance with this?

I had mine out as an adult. It is painful but worth it.

I had mine out when I was 18. As said says, it is painful, but I agree that it's definiately worth it. Having my tonsils out completely stopped all my throat infections. The GP also reckoned I had glandular fever bacteria lurking in my tonsils which would flare up every time I had tonsilitis.

I would definitely recommend having them done if you are having on-going problems. However, make sure you book at least a week off work afterwards (possibly 2).

I had mine out at 21/ 22

The first day or two were awful, I then felt better for a few days then it got worse for another week - those bad bits were painful, found it hard to swallow at times - even the soluble paracetamol... but looking back (even a week after I was healed) it was so worth it... I haven't had so much as a sore throat or cough in the 8/9 years since!

I had mine out at 28 due to recurrent infections. It was a day case and I was out the same day. Sore but bearable - I had to eat a bowl of cornflakes before I was allowed home as you need to keep the wound site clear. I was told total rest for atleast 5 days as there is a risk of bleeding. No jelly and icecream and no chocolate :( . I got n infection even though I ate rough dry foods and gargled after each meal. I had a bleed and was admitted for 3 days, they cauterised the area. I healed well after that and was so much better instantly - no more smelly breath, snoring or time off work ill.

thank you all, glad to hear it's not quite as terrible as i imagined, and also good to hear that it cured the sore throats and snoring - i have sleep apnea which i have frequently suggested might be because of my tonsils but the old gp always said not.

I want mine out. I always said no when it was mentioned as a future option but I am convinced they are the reason I get so ill all the time. They are HUGE.

nancydrewrocked · 07/10/2010 23:52

I had mine out when I was 18 - absolute agony for the first day or two but improved on an almost hourly basis.

I had a hemorrhage on day three, readmitted to hospital but sorted very quickly and I generally consider having them out to be one of the best things I've ever done.

PumpkinsCantDanceTheTango · 07/10/2010 23:56

It sthe bleeding and complications that scare me. But frankly my life seems to be over taken with illness. So much I am worried about goingahead with career plans due to it and also I worry when I have dc I will be ill all the time.

nancy75 - do you do what I do? - obsessively peer at your tonsils to see how they are if you get a slight twinge in your throat? Ca we get them out together?

Nyx · 07/10/2010 23:58

I agree with everyone above - I had mine out at 18 as well, and haven't had anywhere near the trouble with my throat as I used to. However, had a nasty infection afterwards, which was very painful (but solpadeine helped lots).

Sooo worth it though. Good luck!

I had mine out at 18 and it was absolutely fine, bit sore at first but totally manageable pain. I had mine out on Tue and was in pub on Fri night!

Ewe · 08/10/2010 01:00

Disclaimer: you definitely shouldn't go to the pub a few days after a tonsillectomy due to infection risk, I was invincible at 18 hence why I thought it a good idea!
