I get this. My new best shampoo ever (and I've tried loads) is the Elvive shampoo Selenium S5 - dark blue bottle, orange bits, orange coloured shampoo. Has sorted mine out a treat

Aveda does something called Scalp Remedy.
Ignore the bit where it says it's for dandruff. it's very soothing.

Do you use hair dye? I put up with my scalp a mess for yrs before going to the gp and finding out I had an allergy to hair dye.

To clean out the flakes my doctor told me to rub in olive oil, leave it for a couple of hrs and wash it out. After weeks of that I needed a special shampoo - nizoral, it's gentle and very good for sorting out this problem.

It's nothing to do with age, it's more the length your scalp has been putting up with product. Good luck Smile

polytar shampoo is brilliant. The tar stops the skin from flaking and it is anti pruritic too.

Thanks seashore I have to dye it these days as grey is overtaking but I have left it lately nice roots showing I dont put products in my hair and use an organic shampoo.
Its a bit like cradle cap at the front and at the nape of the neck its horrible .
Being allergic to the dye is interesting theory is there an alternative product I could try?

I have it when I use shampoo that contains silicone (declared as dimethicone in cosmetics). most highstreet brands contain it. I use the weleda baby schampoo & bodywash. it is creamy and works well as a 2in1 for my long hair.

www.philipkingsley.com/trichology/problems.asp

Check the link above - uselful as it helps describe the differences between dandruff/dermatitis etc.

The philip kingsley flaky itchy shampoo is very good, admittadely quite expensive but i was at the point where i just needed something to work so felt it was worth the cost.

I can second the hair dye issue, i have realised a lot of my scalp issues were related to dyeing my hair, im now going au naturel mousey brown to try and get my skin sorted!

bbtfm · 08/10/2010 12:15

Im going au naturel GREY..........

check the ingredients for sodium lauryl sulfate

it's an industrial chemical Shock used in alsorts of bath/shampoo/soaps - it obviously strips oil from your hair/skin.

Try using something like faith in nature it doesn't contain any SLS or nastys so won't dry out your skin/scalp - it's not that expensive (about £4 for a big 400ml bottle)

alypaly · 08/10/2010 18:24

its does sound like a bit of sebhorrheic dermatitis for which the doc would give polytar,Tgel, alphosyl shampoo

alypaly · 08/10/2010 18:35

does it look like thisdermatlas.med.jhmi.edu/derm/IndexDisplay.cfm?ImageID=435009044

No thank goodness its not discoloured more flaky and itchy and a couple of scaby bits in the hair which I suppose like spots if you keep picking them.

feel guilty now that looks terrible.
