Cysts on ovaries, come reassure me

I've just been told I have many cysts on both ovaries. Which explains the awful amounts of pain I am in.

Please tell me you've had them and are all better now?

Have you been diagnosed with polycycstic ovaries (PCOS)?

detoxdiva · 06/10/2010 19:53

I have PCOS - cysts were confirmed on 1 of my ovaries, which explained my irregular cycle and initial difficulty in conceiving. I now have 2 dc Smile

I have never suffered pain as a result of them - what have you been told by your gp?

Kaloki · 06/10/2010 20:02

It was a phone consultation, just to discuss the results of my ultrasound. All he said was that I have "many" cysts on both my ovaries, and that I have to go in and see him.

So not actually sure if that is PCOS or not. Tbh I don't know much about it.

I also have many cysts on both ovaries, luckily for me although I do have pcos it hasn't affected my fertility but I do suffer from the acne, body hair, and find it hard to lose weight.

4andnotout · 06/10/2010 20:12

Oh and the only time I have had pain from them is one erupted and it was agony.

Kaloki · 06/10/2010 20:20

Having read up on PCOS I can tick the boxes on

  • obesity
  • facial hair
  • sort of acne, I have been getting spottier - bearing in mind I never had spots in my teens
  • and infertility I guess, having been trying for a year Confused

I am in pain every month during ovulation, although about 4 months ago it stopped being only during ovulation and is now constant.

Atilla is the resident PCOS expert on here Smile so am sure she'll be along soon.

I also get some facial hair and still suffer with acne in my mid 30's Angry. Diet plays a big factor in the condition of my skin - and when I lose weight I also notice a difference in my skin.

Sad I have pelvic exam next Weds for pain in right lower side and periods that are blood clots. Not sure what outcome will be but I expect something similar (altho don't have any of the symptoms you've posted above). Think tho we could support each other when we both some some definate answers.

Best of luck x

PaulineCampbellJones · 06/10/2010 20:28

I have PCOS and the good news is that once diagnosed, there are many treatments that work to control the symptoms. I have had a baby like many on here so just to reassure you that it's not a disaster!

Kaloki · 06/10/2010 20:37

mumbar That sounds like a plan, keep me updated!

Thank you for the reassurance ladies :)

I will - I think I may have a cyst (or an overactive imagination!). I can feel a pea like lump through/ under the skin. Wanting to confirm it's not my imagination I asked a collegue to feel the area today - it feels like a bruise when it is pushed (didn't tell her what I wanted her to to feel, just to see if there was anything there - just as she located and poked it she exclaimed ah theres a lump and I screamed in pain Smile What our other collegues thought I dread to think. Grin

I'll message you here Wednesday, I am panicking about worst case senario but putting my sensible statiscally reasonable head on until then Grin

Just got back from the GP, he's going to do some tests for PCOS

Kaloki and mumbar,

I have PCOS as well but this condition is not in itself painful.

What can be very painful though is endometriosis (that could be a reason why you are also in such pain mumbar and it can give rise to brown blood/stringy blood or clots). It is very common and very underdiagnosed.

BTW this is not picked up on any ultrasound scan; it is usually only diagnosed through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy.

moragbellingham · 07/10/2010 14:24

You can have cysts and not have PCOS too. They'll do a blood test to look at hormone levels for this diagnosis.

mumbar · 07/10/2010 21:06

attila what 'pain' do you get with endometritis? Mine isn't pain during my periods more a naggging back, side, lower right side abdomen pain thats there on and off for a year.

morag what do they doo if you have cysts?

kaloki glad Dr is looking into it. Keep us posted and I'll be back on Wednesday with more info (or none if nothing there!)

Kaloki · 08/10/2010 10:41

mumbar what my GP has told me so far is that multiple cysts aren't treated as such, as they will go away (and most likely come back again)

Though a friend of mine had a huge cyst (fist sized) and had an operation to deflate it.

Forgot to say, the GP doesn't think my pain is actually related to the cysts. So I may ask about endometriosis, thank you for mentioning the Attila. It seems to share some side effects with PCOS.

My pain today has spread down into my groin area as well, it's not unbearable but I get waves that can take my breath away. I am hoping for answers but not sure what to do if the pelvic exam doesn't show anything.

moragbellingham · 08/10/2010 15:47

Depends on how big the cysts are and if you have other symptoms.
I had multiple cysts (found accidently) and no follow-up or monitoringConfused
