Is this really chicken pox - really?!?!?!

Want to be sure because need to know whether to take usual avoidance of others principles.

Ds is 1 yrs and dd is 3 yrs. Both have been exposed to chicken pox recently.

They have not been unwell (no fever etc), apart from snotty cold this week. Yesterday noticed small hard raised red bumps. Neither of them have many - mostly on arms and shoulders, a few on the legs, ds has 2 on his trunk and dd none on hers. Dd tells me they itch a bit (but she could be attention seeking as I haven't seen her scratch a whole lot). They probably have 10-15 spots each.

When they got up this morning I was expecting them to be covered - but haven't noticed any further proliferation of spots from yesterday.

Spots are not blistered in appearance...

Perplexed / mystified!

If the spots don't blister in the next 12 hours I would doubt it's chicken pox, but it does typically start on the trunk and face and then spread to the limbs..if you look carefully you may find a blistered spot. The number of spots varies wildly from one or two to hundreds.

Not necessarily any fever or even feeling unwell.

Alternatively could be bites?

I should have added in the uncertain time at the moment I would assume it is chicken pox and take precautions..avoid pregnant womed and those who may have a compromised immune system.

thanks zippytoes - I am avoiding others currently....don't think it's bites...I'll just have to keep observing. If they don't blister by this evening, and they don't develop any more spots do you think it would be reasonable to go back into circulation tomorrow?

...this has started on the limbs and not much evidence of spots on the trunk and face (two spots on ds' face, one on dd's, two spots on ds' trunk, none on dd's)

Just look for the blistrs - they should appear shortly if it is chicken pox.

DD was not poorly with chicken pox at all and didn't have that many spots either. It was all over and done with pretty fast too luckily.

Hulababy · 09/09/2005 09:40

This picture shows all 3 satges of the chicken pox. Not sure how clear it is though.

Lonelymum · 09/09/2005 09:42

Hulababy you beat me to it but because I have found the pictures anyway, I will post it. HMC, this is quite typical of what chickenpox looks like.

Lonelymum · 09/09/2005 09:42

But the child doesn't have to have so many spots. My mother said I had three!

Hulababy · 09/09/2005 09:44

Agree lonelymum - DD had no where near that many spots, especially not all at the same time. Think she only had one or two max on her face in the whole time.

handlemecarefully · 09/09/2005 09:44

ummm - looks like the early lesions possibly.

Well it probably is cp - but thankfully, looks like they've both got a pretty mild dose.

..and thank you

Ds1 got CP first and I counted 50 spots all over him. It was only when ds2 and dd got a few days later that I realsied how mild ds1's attack had been. They had at least 50 on their faces alone! But none of them were ill with it really: ds2 had a temperature for one afternoon only.

Hulababy · 09/09/2005 11:15

Fingers crossed it stays that way foor you hmc. As I said DD wasn't oorly int he slightest withit, and TBh the spots didn't really bother her much either. Although we bough calamine lotion, we didn't need it. A dose or two of piriton liquid was more than enough for her.

zippitippitoes · 10/09/2005 09:54

Is it chickenpox?

zippitippitoes · 10/09/2005 20:56

I have to know now, are they suffering from chicken pox??

fqueenzebra · 10/09/2005 21:43

can't you take them to get a GP's opinion, zippitoes?

zippitippitoes · 11/09/2005 08:00

fqueen not really HMC might object

fqueenzebra · 11/09/2005 21:37

Oh... derrrrr!!!

zippitippitoes · 12/09/2005 09:07

HMC

Please tell me whether they had chicken pox...

handlemecarefully · 12/09/2005 23:03

Sorry zippitoes - haven't been on mumsnet for a while. Yes - I think it is chickenpox. Just a very mild case.

Happy now???
