Help with high blood pressure

I need help bringing my blood pressure down...

Went to doctor last week because of bad neck and saw a different doctor to my normal one. He took my blood pressure and said it was high, then looked at my records and said the past few readings were high and if it didn't come down I'd have to come off the pill and some other tablets I'm on.

So now I'm stressing about coming off the pill because I have polycystic ovaries and can barely walk for 2 weeks each month due to pain this causes me which is why I'm on it in the first place!

I'm not surprised my blood pressure has been high the past few times I've been there as last time was after almost a week of a bad neck and no sleep due to headaches. Then the time before I was worried about my breast and was referred to breast clinic. And the time before that I was worried about something else. So each time they take it is when I'm stressing over something.

In the past I've taken a monitor home and it's been diagnosed as fine.

But now I have to go back at the end of this week and have it checked again and now I have barely slept all weekend for worrying about it.

I barely drink, I eat healthy, true I could do more exercise but my necks still bad so am limited, so am at a loss as to what to do and I'm sure worrying about it isn't going to help.

I have high BP -164/123 this morning. I take 3 lots of hbp meds and take contraceptive pill - cerrazette, as I have bad fibroids and was on ym knees with pain and heavy bleeding. The cerazzette stops both.

I always get highish readings because having my bp taken makes me incredibly stressed. White coat syndrome.
Ask for the monitor again - that will give a more realistic reading.

Saltire · 04/10/2010 11:22

Also, mp doc told me that using the wrong blood pressure cuff can affect readings too

TotalChaos · 04/10/2010 11:23

my bp went too high on the combined pill, so I was put on cerazette and have found it brilliant. Had some irregular light and largely painless bleeding the first year, then periods stopped completely.

other than medication, to get high BP down, avoid processed foods (they tend to have salt hidden in them!), exercise a bit more - brisk walking is fine, and if you are overweight try and get your weight down.

I have high blood pressure caused by pregnancy and still hasn't come down after having dd4. I have lowered it a little by exercise and weight loss..

I am hoping to have the merina coil fitted

My BP is borderline (150 over 90 last reading) at GPs, but always ok (120-130ish over 80) at home. I am going to do a 24 hour trace at home to check, as I was on HRT till a month ago - and could do with going back on some sort of low dose for a little longer (multiple reasons).

TBH, I don't drink, don't eat much salt or processed food, exercise, am definitely not overweight - the biggest factor is probably genetic, and stress. I've recently moved house, so I"m hoping as we settle the BP will too!

Good luck with yours, AuntieM, I agree another home trace/check would be a good idea.

Oh - and caffeine. The one thing that really raises my bp (and everyone's, in fact) is coffee. I have found a very good decaff Smile

TotalChaos · 04/10/2010 11:44

oh yes - coffee can raise bp for half an hour after you have a cup.

AuntieMaggie · 04/10/2010 12:49

Same here Elibean... Mine was 150 over 90 when I was in the surgery - considering I'd attend the breast clinic the day before and was in a lot of pain I didn't think it was too bad.

I don't drink much coffee or eat processed foods.

I am overweight but have been losing it and exercise is hard to fit in when I'm workign extra hours to make up for having time off for medical appts.

I'm on a low dose pill already :(
