I went to out of hours GP tonight for reasons that dont matter. But she told me the reason GPs dont want to make referrals because everytime they make a refferral they have to pay out!
I never knew this, no wonder people have to push and push to get refferals Shock

I now have to go back to my own GP and give him hell on monday to refer me as he refused the other week!! Angry

Don't know how true that is but I do know that I suddenly started having bouts of tonsilitus and on the third bout ended up in hospital. The consultant asked if I suffered from tonsillitus often and I explained only in the last 6 months and he said "Oh well let's just take them out then"

4 weeks later they were out.

I don't think for one minute if hadn't ended up in hospital a GP would have referred me

They also get paid for every year they offer you contraceptive services, get you immunised, check your blood pressure and weight and get your to engage in a stop smoking or weight loss clinic. That's why GPs like Mirena coils so much, five minute insertion - woo hoo - five years contraceptive services provided thankyouverymuchmakethechequeouttocash. Wink

Also psychologically, your GP surely has to want to give it a go first (fixing you I mean). It's a bit mean to let someone train for seven years and then just use him or her as a conduit to someone who has studied for ooh perhaps ten years instead? Wink

See I've never had that with my GP, he's very quick to refer. They've found somethnig wrong every time though.

Perhaps GP pick? Find another one? Some GPs are better than others. Other GPs at my surgery wouldn't give a shit about most things. I hope my current GP never leaves.

they also get paid a different rate for each client on their books depending on which age bracket they are in. The older the patient the more money they get paid.

in their defence, they have to pay for alot of things that we dont see behind the scenes. How much does 50-60 missed appointments a month cost a surgery in lost time when a GP could be sitting doing valuable paperwork for those really sick patients instead of sitting there waiting for that soooo pooorly one that couldnt be bothered to phone to cancel the appt.
dont forget we get called in for MOT's at 50 cholesterol tests, heart and health checks, smears. these all take time and money and without them ,some of us would be dead.

Gps and pharmacists have alot more shared responsibilty from a legal angle and the ones that do it correctly deserve to be paid

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 03/10/2010 01:27

They also get paid when you go for a smear and when you have a baby Hmm

I prefer my pharmacist to my GP who is a very nice GP...

alypaly · 03/10/2010 01:43

some pharmacists do seem to know more than some gp's...i would agree with you there solo

My pharmacist is really lovely. A mild mannered Indian gent who has all the time in the world for each of his customers. He tells the truth too which is a bonus. If I ask him what will work, he'll tell me; even if he's making less money out of me by doing so. I've told him that he can never retire ~ ever!!!

alypaly · 03/10/2010 01:54

a good pharmacist is nice to know especially if they are not out to make a fast buck
