Is anyone on Nifedipine - My baby has just been put on it - Advice

My dd 8 months has just been put on Nifedipine as they think she has a blood vessel disorder and has occasions when her limbs have gone black. Since going on this medicine she has had a barking cough, especially at night. I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this after having this medicine or wether it could be from something else. I have took her to the gp who just said her chest was clear.

No clue on the medication - sorry - but does this mean they've worked out what is wrong? how are all the investigations going? Been praying fo you guys a lot. x

i have a very very vague recollection that a dry cough may be a side effect of betablockers.

what does the pack insert say?

EccentricaGallumbits · 02/10/2010 21:13

i may be very wrong though. ignore me.

hope she's ok though.

cazzybabs · 02/10/2010 21:15

no EccentricaGallumbits you are correct a cough is an effect of betablockers and some other anti-hypertensives

Miasma · 02/10/2010 21:16

I had it after surgery when I was pregnant.. It didnt make me cough, I dont remember any side effects at all tbh.

EccentricaGallumbits · 02/10/2010 21:17

nifedipine isn't a betablocker though is it? v long time since i did any cardiac stuff.

mummytopebs · 02/10/2010 21:20

Puddlepuss no they havent figured out what it is yet, they said might be a new condition, they are now researching across the world cos they cant find any reference to her symptoms in the uk. She has been put on the med to try and stop it happening.

Not sure what beta blockers do but this relaxes the blood vessels. The doctor i took her to didnt know if it could cause a cough because he has never seen a baby on it!!

Blimey you poor thing. I really don't know what to say but good luck. She is a beautiful little girl. x

cazzybabs · 02/10/2010 21:24

well when my GP was working out what anti-hypertensives to put me on, because I am breast feeding, one of the side effects to dd could be a cough...but actually I am different ones so no cough...

and I have no idea what Nifedipine is

PacificDogwood · 02/10/2010 21:27

It is a Calcium Channel Blocker and AFAIK does not cause a cough, but I'll toddle off and check in a mo'.
It is used as an antihypertensive and also to treat Reynaud's Disease.

I remember you from some of your previous posts, mummytopebs, but never posted as the symptoms you described your DD had just baffled me.

mummytopebs · 02/10/2010 21:34

They have also baffled the doctors to pacificdogwood!

Her newest symptom is she doesnt seem to be able to feel heat in her hands, she has climbed up the radiator 3 times and last week caught her with her hands flat on the glass oven door when i was cooking a chicken and it had been on 200 degrees for an hour!! She now has blisters dont know if off this or just her general blisters cos she gets them on her fingers all the time, but one of them has gone swollen and yellow so prob be back at out of hours tomorrow

The Children's British National Formulary mentions 'nasal congestion' as a possible side effect of Nifedipine but not cough.

HTH a bit.

And good luck with finding an answer to her symptoms.
Smile

PacificDogwood · 02/10/2010 21:37

X-posted - poor thing! Sounds really weird, hopefully Nifedipine will make a difference.

mummytopebs · 02/10/2010 21:41

It has started to she has only gone a purple blotchy colour about 2 times this week which is a vast improvement, and no deep purple or black thank goodness. They really want to find the cause but said they need to start to treat the symptoms especially as winter is coming up
