Can you recommend a private gastroenterologist?

My poor brother has been very unwell for some time with digestive problems. He's done all sorts of exams and they still don't have a clue as to what might be wrong. He was told that he's almost definitely celiac but genestic tests came back negative, so it's back to square 1....
Can anyone recommend a private consultant he London that he could see (he lives in Portugal).
Alternatively, please tell me how I can find one, look for references, etc.
Many thanks!

Has he been tested for gluten sensitivity gene (ie not just celiac)?

brimfull · 02/10/2010 15:14

try fosters cinsultant guide

I have another suggestion:
pop over to glutenfreeforum and ask there (there is a Doctors subject), he might even get some advice on drs in Portugal?
Also, if you think it's gluten related, he could also try diet anyway (that's exactly what I did with my ds, best thing we have ever done). For me health was more important then a piece of paper.
My ds then did have a gene test and was found to have a gluten sensitivity gene.

Thanks everyone. He has been on a gluten free diet for a few months now, but is still having these episodes. He thinks that he just ate something that had gluten hidden in it, like processed chips or something like that, but it looks like it's something else.

Thank you for those suggestions. I'll have a look at that webste and also try the forum.

hello tugamommy - have sent you a private message on here about st mark's in london. had a wonderful experience with them, and cannot recommend them and their private arm highly enough.

Most NHS consultants do private work too. Just identify a good NHS consultant and see them on a private basis.

There's no such thing as a private medical school or training programme: they all train in the NHS.

UCH is supposed to be the best hospital in the country? Try there.

LaCerbiatta · 03/10/2010 11:44

Thank you swedishy! I no longer have access to the email address registered here but I sent you my current one. Hopefully you've received it!

I'll have a look at UCH too, thank you!

I came across Dr Simon Anderson a few times on my searches - here. Has anyone heard of him?

Hi

Dr Stuart Bloom at UCH & The Wellington Hosp. (He works from both but on diff days).

DH saw him a couple of years ago and he excellent and very thorough without being alarmist in any way. Liked a lot.

And his fees are of the standard rate covered by private medical ins. (not all consultants are).

Hope that helps.

You're welcome tugamommy - I've emailed you directly (not a mumsnet pm) - hope it helps x

Thanks! I'll check my email in the evening (at work now)

Thank you skandi, that's really helpful. I'll try calling him and see how quickly we can get an appointment.

My brother is getting really stressed and anxious which makes it all worse.... (I personally think he has IBS but he won't accept it because he doesn't think it is a real disease....)

If it helps, Dr Bloom's specialisms are IBS, Crohns and inflamatory bowl issues so perfect for your brother I would think.

You can see him at the Wellington Hosp or at University College London Hospital (Harley St on 15, I think is the website).

You should be able to get an app within a week, my DH did.

Wishing you the best.
x

Mr Ameet Patel at Princess Grace and Kings College Hospital. I've been a patient with him for three years and can't fault him at all.

lazymumofteenagesons · 04/10/2010 20:52

Try this link www.londondigestivehealth.co.uk my son has been to see Dr Fairclough there, but I'm sure they are all good.

LaCerbiatta · 04/10/2010 21:09

Thanks akhems and lazymumofteenagesons, it's great to have these personal recommendations!

I have already booked an appointment with a doctor I had recommended here, but I'll pass your suggestions on to my brother and let him decide!
