Weird pain in my hand/veins/forearm - any ideas?

I have a very bizarre pain in my hand and forearm. It almost feels like my blood is really trying hard to pump through my veins.

It is mainly my hand, particularly my thumb and that pressure point area. I haven't injured it, it feels a little better if I don't use it at all.

Any ideas?

Me and DW both got a smilar pain as you describe when we had young toddlers. I know you have a toddler who is underweight but even so.

Do you pick your toddler up often? It was the act of opening the hands wide and stretching the thumb back to grip DSs round the chest under their arms and then picking them up out of a cot etc that did it. Once they reached a certain weight the strain was quite severe. It was basically a repetitive strain injury.

Could that be it?

Do you have neck problems? Maybe referred pain from cervical nerves? Is it better/worse with sitting, standing, lying down?

Ewe · 01/10/2010 21:03

I do pick her up quite often, maybe more so recently as we are trying to remove pushchair. It hurts more when typing, using iPhone, holding things. Not noticed if better or worse sitting/standing.

It feels a little numb and tingly sometimes too. It only started in last week or so. No neck pain.

Is it worth going to docs despite symptoms being v.vague?

Could be carpal tunnel syndrome... have a look on google. A girl at my work had it and had some physio that helped a lot. Hope you feel better soon!

Ewe Have you tried raising your hand above your head for a few mins? TBH, it sound like either Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury).

RSI occurs when you do the same repetitive tasks like texting, typing etc.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is when the Carpal tunnel in the wrist fills with fluid and presses on the nerve(s) which in turn causes tingling and/or numbness. This can be relieved, sometimes, by raising your hand above your head.

Best to check with your Dr though. Keep us posted on how you get on.

Take care.

It does feel much better after keeping my hand above my head for a while. Will see doc anyway, thanks for advice, I had managed to convince myself I had a lethal blood clot heading up my arm to my brain Grin

Hi Ewe. How did it go at the docs?

Ewe · 05/10/2010 00:40

Hi chick, thanks for asking after me! I didn't manage to get an appointment on Sat morning surgery and am away now until tomorrow evening. However, after a weekend of no work and being away since Sunday night for work but not typing etc it seems to be fine!

Think it must have been to do with RSI or something, will keep an eye on it and book appointment if it comes back.

check how you hold your arm when using the computer...could be carpal or ulnar. if it's not the arm you use for the mouse, often leaning on your elbow can cause these symptoms. if it's the mouse hand, the pressure of leaning on the wrist can cause problems.

ChilledChick2 · 06/10/2010 20:28

Hi Ewe

Did you manage to see or get an appointment with the Dr at all?
