Mouth Ulcers

Has anyone got any good remedies for mouth ulcers? I am getting loads at the moment and they are lasting for ages.
Have seen the dentist in the last month so no issues there.
Have got that Bonjela on a stick thing but I want to know if there is anything I can take to prevent them.
TIA

I used corlon pellets and a homeopathic remedy when I used to suffer badly with them. They both helped and once when I went to the dentist I was given some lignacaine(sp?) gel to apply sparingly when I wanted to eat or clean my teeth. Bearing in mind I used to get crops of about 10-15 at a time ,I needed alll the help I could get.
Some foods trigger or make them worse IMO

I find mouth rinsing with saline several times a day helps. ie Boiled water with a level dessert=spoonful of salt in about a pint and a half.

Thank you!

Corsodyl mouthwash to keep them clean. They take longer to heal if they get any infection in them. Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol too painful with ulcers.
There are over the counter gels that you can rub on them that help to make them less sore. Difflucan mouthwash will numb them if things are very painful or your bonjela gel.
Has anything else changed? Sometimes they are hormonally linked in women; such as a new contraceptive pill or around periods.
If you are suddenly getting lots have a look at your diet and see if there are any triggers such as tomatoes.
I have assumed you aren't anaemic, they also run in families and more women get them than men.

I once had a load of mouth ulcers (more than 20) at the same time. GP said they'd go of their own accord in about 7 days, but I couldn't eat, swallow or clean my teeth without pain. Someone (I think possibly on Mumsnet) recommended L-Lysine (not sure about spelling) capsules, so I got some from Holland & Barratt and they did the trick.

please try and change your toothpaste to one that does not contain SLS (sodium laureth sulphate) - boots expert whitening toothpaste is what i use as it is the only one i have found that does not contain SLS.

I struggled terribly with mouth ulcers for years - suffering with over 10 at a time at one point, both my doctor and dentist couldnt explain why they were so bad so in the end the doctor prescribed difflam spray to numb my mouth to enable me to eat. I happened to see a locum doctor one day who suggested trying to get a toothpaste without SLS and it had been a revelation. After about a month of using it i realised that ulcers i had slowly healed and i am now only suffering about one every so often - the improvement has been dramatic and it is really worth trying to see if it works for you.

I also have bad eczema and i have cut SLS out off the body products and have seen an improvement in the condition of my skin.

Yes I agree with crazyaccountant certain toothpastes (I think colgate whitening was one) have given me dreadful ulcers.

PaulineCampbellJones · 29/09/2010 13:32

Wow thanks.
I use Rembrandt at the moment so I will go and buy the Boots one at the weekend and some Corlan pellets.
Have also started on the mini pill after giving birth which I have never had before.
Thanks all, I have hope now that I can eat a bag of crisps again Grin

Mine can be terrible just before menstruation. I have found taking Vit B has helped a little.
It is horrible when you're in so much pain but hungry!

anonymousbird · 29/09/2010 13:44

My DD (5) suffers very badly. So does DH and his Mum. My dentist said it can run in the family, just the slightly nudge on the gum or whatever certain people have tendency to then develop ulcer. Poor DD suffers so much, it makes me nearly cry myself.

Can these corlan and other remedies and mouthwashes etc be used for a child?

TIA.

HotSprocket · 29/09/2010 13:46

Anbesol gel always clears mine up and it's a really numbs them as well so you can eat pain free. You'll find it where the bonjela is in the chemist.

Just be careful noot to confuse it with Anusol...Grin

PaulineCampbellJones · 29/09/2010 15:32

Ha ha, now that would be interesting. DD uses the baby Anbesol so I will get some of the adult stuff.
Looks like a lot of points destined for my Advantage card at the weekend!
