Help How Do I get a Wee Sample from a 10month old!!

I have a 10month old dd who is on antibiotics to prevent her from getting urine infections. She was recently ill with a sore throat and the doctor wanted me to get a wee sample to make sure her infection hadn't come back. This is easier said than done - it was bad enough as a baby, but now she's standing and crawling and its proving very difficult to catch a wee so to speak!!

Anyone got any tips on how I can catch a wee - this is without touching her skin or mine as the samples are easily contaminated. We are already on the 3rd sample!

Thanks!

I also need to get regular samples from my 11 week old. Why dont you phone you local hispital and scrounge some of the special bags for the purpose. They stick on and you can put them under a nappy (makes sure they stay in place) and just check every now and then

The dr or hv should be able to give you some of these bags , or perhaps a pharmacist. They wee in the bag then you can snip the corner and empty it into a sterilised bottle. Mind you there is a knack to using them, make sure it is well stuck underneath. dd managed to poo into one and contaminated the sample

You can also get a sterile pad from the doc, that you put inside the nappy, and when its wet, you suck up the wee with a syringe and transfer it into a bottle.

dd has the same problem but even with the special bags I just can't get round it now that she's older (26 months). After many battles and wasting 3 of those bags, last time I gave up and went to to the hospital instead where the nurse applied the bag in a matter of seconds and 20 minutes later it was full!!!

is your hospital nearby so you can just pop round? I didn't need an appointment.

good luck

The last few times I needed to get a urine sample from ds, they gave me a sterile pad, like a mini sanitary towel. Ds did a wee onto that, and it was extracted from the pad by a syringe.

Thanks for your advice everyone, have tried the local chemist and no joy with these bags/pads. Rang the hospital today and doesn's sound like they like to use these bags as they are just as easy to contaminate. They advised me to sterlise a tupperware pot or something and try to catch it in that - maybe we'll just pitch up and see if they take pity - I've been trying all week!

Corky go back to the gp and ask if they have the pads. You shouldn't have this much trouble, they should have given you something automatically. Ask to speak to the nurse at the surgery if they have one.

We've always had a nightmare getting wee samples from ds1 (now 4). We now have a routine where I give the pot to dh and sa "you do it" He literally trails ds1 holding the pot then quickly catches it when he goes. This could be easier with a boy. The worst one ever was whne we neded first urine of the day. Ds1 was awake at 5am- so we were all up following him around- he didn't go until 6.30!

Hi All

I'm not sure whether this would work for you or not but it's worth a go.

We had to get an example of my dd urine for some tests at the hospital, one of the nurses said that if you blow on her stomache she will go, I thought she was kidding but my dh tried and believe it or not it worked.
