coil vs POP vs depo (vs implant)

I need to find a solution for contraception and dysmenorhea (sp?), but unfortunately can't consider anything much other than the above.

I am leaning towards the coil (used depo and pop in the past, and not keen on the implant), but looking online there seems to be so much information/individual experience.

I was wondering what sort of examination was needed before the coil - is it any worse than a smear?

Hi! I had the Mirena coil inserted about this time last year under GA because I've not had any DCs. Was mainly for dysmenorhoea. The gynaecologist just gave me an ultrasound. It has been fantastic - no more pain and very light periods.

I agree with you about so much information online. I read some of this the day before my procedure and nearly cancelled....

I had a Mirena coil in between my children. It took a few months to settle down and it stopped my periods which was great.
I didn't have any examination beforehand,I just popped to my local Family Planning Clinic and a Dr fitted it there and then.I didn't find it painful at all although I think some people do.I haven't had a Vaginal birth and only dilated to 4cm's so pretty much like someone who hasn't had a baby!

Thanks Bishoplyn - sounds like you had good results from it.

Thanks Mumcah: That's good to know that you found it not painful to be put in, as I'd be looking at the GP putting it in.

Not sure why, but I have far less 'eww' factor about the coil than the implant.

I would really recommend going to experienced people if you go for the mirena. I went to the family planning clinic, where they do loads, but have heard bad experiences about less frequent GP fitters.

Mirena was fantastic, stopped my massively heavy periods . Unfortunately that meant that I didn't know I was pg until about 18 weeks in, but hey, she is lovely (so everyone thinks). Grin

Well depo is great for me. But I don't have experience of any of the other options.
