Hi all,

dd was 4 weeks prem (36+1) and is 9 weeks today, weighs 4.17 kilos.

due jabs later this afternoon. was hoping to give a dose of calpol (her first !) before the jabs...

Calpol bottle says '2-3 months (weighing 4 kg and not a premature baby): 2.5ml single spoonful)'

Just wondering if it is OK or not to give under these circs prior to jab or if safest to wait ? Anyone had a (slightly) prem baby and asked their GP ?

I presume it is to cover weak liver / kidneys but dd is in decent health...

hmmm...

wish I could help, hub, but have no idea. Ask GP? My DD didn't need calpol after her baby jabs, but she was full term and fit and well. Is Camille fighting fit?

hub2dee · 06/09/2005 15:00

dd seems fine. Happy. Gaining weight etc.

HVs at baby clinic / not answering phone, spent 12 mins waiting for NHS direct to answer etc..

Probably better safe than sorry and will only give afterwards if she is outrageously / unuslaly grumpy.

Thanks gb.

Our HV recommended a tiny bit of calpol before immunisations.
I know bottle says 2-3 months.
But my HV recommended it - just a little bit.
Even though ds was 2 wks prem.
Hope that helps.
They should be able to advise you when you go for your actual jabs - and even if you take it straight after, it will still be o.k.
Does that help ?

CarlyP · 06/09/2005 15:05

mine were both 4wks early and i gave them calpol before injections!

hub2dee · 06/09/2005 15:11

Thank you RachD and CarlyP.

Given a half dose - hopefully she'll be a little bit dosy and it will take away some pain etc., but not be enough meds to risk upsetting her 'constituion' IYSWIM.

Off to clinic right now. Thanks for relevant input.

Hub2dee

When I worked as a nurse in SCBU we always gave calpol prior to immums

hub2dee · 06/09/2005 16:28

Cheers marbeth.

No Big Deal ? Well... not sure dd agrees, CarlyP.

She went a pleasant shocking red, yelled, pooed etc. Not a happy bunny. We had given her a little calpol before (not full 2.5ml dose) and gave her milk afterwards. She is scheduled a nice fat sleep on daddy instead of in her carrycot, LOL.

Best go be a human mattress.

I wouldnt worry about it really... (only give 1 2.5mil spoonful, maybe a little less on the spoon!)

I always remember this:
In order for medication to GET their licenses it must not be possible for a small over dose (or even quite a substantial one) to cause seriouse harmful side effects...

also most medicines are for BODY WEIGHT anyway (just out over the counter ones presume adults are a ceratin size etc!), so there for giving your child who is over 4kg a dose suitable for kg is almost garenteed NOT to do your child any harm!

(oh also, before anyone comments, i would only use theory for my own children (never my charges!)
