ds2 has started getting blue-ish lips occasionally, for no apparent reason.

First time it happened I took him to the dr but it had gone by the time I got him there, doc checked him over and couldn't find anything wrong with him.

It's now happened several times - so I need to take him back and get it checked out a bit more seriously I think.

Just wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction - what should I ask the doc about and get them to check out/rule out?

haven't yet been able to pin down anything specific that triggers it, can last anything between 10 mins and an hour. It's happened mostly at nursery, so they are used to seeing him (and plenty of other kids) so are able to tell that the lips really are changing colour. Once they let him have a nap like this as it was nap time, other times they have kept him awake if it has been nap time or he has been awake anyway and he has been fine pootling around, no obvious breathing difficulties or any other associated changes.

And just how worried should I be?

Many thanks...

DS gets blue-ish lips when he does his breath-holding thing but it goes when he starts breathing again.

What else happens when he gets blue-ish lips? Is it cold? Do his fingertips go white? In which case it could be Raynaud's syndrome.

Otherwise, could be heart/circulation issues - can you or the nursery staff take a photo of it when it happens, so you have pics of it? Some docs don't/won't believe in anything until they have visual evidence of it (take the e.g. of my sis - DD having fits - doc said "doubt it, video it next time" - cos of course the first thing you're going to do when your 1yo is having a fit is reach for the phone/video camera Hmm)

My younger son has this too!! It seems to happen when he is run-down or tired. If he has been ill his lips can go blue and round his mouth purple. He's been checked out and now (several years later) it xan still happen if he's not well. No other problems. Try not to panic - there is not always a bad cause of these things.

My DS also has this from time to time, especially when he has a cold. Did any of you get any answers/clues from your doctor?

Didn't get any clues from doc but she didn't seem too worried as he had just had chickenpox, had been sent home from nursery because he'd had a big nasty nappy and there was d&v going around (although that was it, no more D and no V at all) and it was the first time. she did say to go back if I got worried if it happened again the next day, which it didn't.

Don't think it is raynaud's syndrome, not noticiably white-fingered in the cold although he is an incredibly pale-skinned child, can see lots of blood vessels beneath the skin.

had asked nursery to take a pic of blue lips and then - if i didn't get there in time - to take an 'after' pic in same place to see pink lips so that the doc won't be able to put it down to the light. they have taken one for me, must remember to prompt them to send it on so I can take it with me to docs/

I guess I am worried about it being a heart/circulation thing - just want to get that actively and explicitly ruled out rather than for them to say 'there there, it's usually nothing to worry about' and then for something major to happen and for him to have been the 1% that it was something to worry about!

But it is good to know that others have had similar problems and it hasn't been anything major Grin
