Clotting in period

Sorry if TMI or been asked before (have check old threads for answers)

My periods have been getting heavier with larger clots for the past few months, slight lower back pain and also during ovulation. Ocaasionaly a sharp pain lower right tummy - literally short and sharp.

This time I don't seem to have much of a bleed as such but passed a large clot yesterday - about 8/10 cm long and a few more about the size of a 50p piece. I don't have any pain (a stinging internally after clot had passed).

I'm wondering if anyone could advise me how normal this is and if its not what could be causing it??

That's fairly normal. As you get older you can actually get heavier bleeding and clotting. Similarly hormonal contraceptives, weight gain and anaemia can cause this.

whats considered older whomoved?? No weight gain, no contrapceptives but have chronic aneamia anyway (iron count normally 11/12)

Ah well if you have chronic anaemia - I suggest you go to the GP and request nefamic acid and tranxemic acid to reduce the bleeding. Or consider something like a Mirena coil to reduce or stop your periods.

Anaemia will make you bleed more - it's a vicious circle I had suffered with for years.

And in terms of age 35 is apparently the age at which they tend to start getting heavier. Also post birth.

Oh OK, I'm only just 30 so probably young for the older part! But have been aneamic since I was 10 which is to do with my stomach problems. Maybe my iron count has dropped again???

Maybe. Get it tested.

You could be developing endometriosis though so it's worth getting checked out.

I would go and see your GP. They will usually take swabs and arrange an ultrasound scan. They will also normally suggest you have a blood test to check your thyroid is working properly and you're not anaemic.

It could be endometriosis but this doesn't usually show on a scan, so you may be referred to a gynaecologist for a laproscopy. I had one in April as I had heavy periods with large clots too. It turned out I had endometriosis and a large cyst on my left ovary.

It's definitely worth being checked out for your peace of mind. Good luck.

GP should be able to prescribe something to help with heavy periods.
Another cause can be fibroids.

had wondered about fibriods - the thing is the period has not seemed heavy iyswim its just been the clots Ive lost Hmm
