Vit B1 for Bites (flies and fleas) - It Works!

All my life I have had to make sure I had all the sprays, wipes, deet, etc if I knew I was going to be out at dusk. This didnt always stop me from getting bitten by those midges and coming up in some quite big, itchy lumps. Antihistamine only helped a little.

The cat recently had fleas and no one else but me was getting bitten. Itching drove me mad.

I went OTT and wore myself out washing, cleaning, spraying, etc.

Well, a friend recommended I take Vitamin B1 and when I get bitten they won't like the taste. I had 2 bites on my foot, they went a tiny bit red but did not swell up. I am in the garden and see that flies only come to within 4" of me and go away.

You cannot imagine how happy I am. I take one tablet per day. Dont know what is in it but it works for me.

Brewers yeast tablets always worked for me (think they have vit B in them.)I think it emits something through your pores that acts as an insect repellent.

I always used to give brewers yeast tablets to my dog too and he never got fleas.

BrigitBK - Do you think I could give my cat maybe half a tablet of brewers yeast in with his food too?

FranSanDisco. I hope they work for you too. Not sure how long it takes to work its way through to the skin. You could expose yourself after 4-5 days and see what happens. Smile

oh I will try this. I react very badly to horse fly bites and it has got to the point now where I am afraid to be bitten.

thanks

Don't give anything to cats - it is not a good idea, they have a very different metabolism to us and even to dogs - e.g. cats can be killed by dog flea treatment as it has permethrin in it which can kill a cat but doesn't affect dogs or humans. It is just not worth risking any non prescribed supplement or medicine with a cat.

What would the dose be for a dog, please?

BrigitBigKnickers · 24/09/2010 09:17

I had a shetland sheep dog (cocker spaniel type size) and think I used to give him two tablets a day with food but I can't remember the strength of the tablets.

These are brewers yeast tablets you can get specially for dogs and it says 1 tablet per 4kgof weight. Supposed to be really good for their coats too.

We just used to use the regular brewers yeast tablets you can get from the health food shop though which I think are cheaper.

One word of caution though- I have read that some dogs can be allergic to Berewers yeast so best to start with a low dose

Thank you so much, BigKnickers, I might give them a try.

And I will try the human ones on dd, who seems to be a midge magnet.
