Okay, we thought ds had a mild case of chicken pox, but it's been 11 days and it seems to be spreading a bit still. So, now I'm thinking scabies. Has anyone done treatment that does not involve the prescription cream? He's only 2 and I hate to use something so toxic.

just looked up This for you and it looks like you need to see the doctor

jabberwocky · 05/09/2005 20:41

Well, actually my brother is a doctor and he initially thought it was chicken pox blisters. Then when I told him it wasn't spreading all over like cp but wasn't clearing up either he now thinks scabies. He would rather use natural treatments atm and I have looked up a few things but hoped someone would be on who had experienced the problem firsthand.

But where could a 2 yr old get scabbies? she would need to be in prolonged skin to skin contact with an infected person. For some extrange reason I was under the idea that they were a form of STD. It may be worth it to find the source, you don't want that person re-infecting her or infecting other children.

extrange??? strange. I have been in my other language mode all day long... sorry

Nit lotion works very well. I know because i caught it at work, and we had to treat 30 residents then treat ourselves within 24 hours.

chandra, it doesn't need to be prolonged at all, it can be spread on bedding, clothing, skin contact, holding hands etc. It is sometimes referred to as "Barracks Itch" as it spreads around so quickly.

they are tiny little mites that burrow under your skin.

Thanks colditz! He seemed to come down with this after going to a birthday party, so... I'm thinking that's where he got it/them.

wash al his bedding on a hot wash or they will all come back

Scabies are little mites that burrow under your skin, especially around points like wrists.
You look for little silvery lines on your skin and especially look for redness beteewn fingers.
The itching is worse at night.
Treatment for it is being covered with a lotion from the Docs that you wear for 24 hours all over your skin, from neck down.
Then wash all clothing and bed linen on hot wash.
Bad attack may require extra dose.
Everyone to be treated the same in family if they show signs of it.
We had it at a rest home and it was on a resident who came into contact with itat Daycare.

ds2 had them a few years ago - caught them from a friend of his after a sleepover. His mum knew he had them and chose not to tell me .

They really took some shifting as I didn't realise what it was for a good couple of weeks and by then it was quite widespread.

Jabberwocky - I think you may have no other choice but to use the chemical stuff I'm afraid and the itching can carry on for a while after. We used anti-histamine to help with that.

Thanks everyone. (sigh) This is not how I had planned to spend my extra - and much anticipated - day off!
