Ps my acne was so bad sometimes I did not want to go out, kind of sad I'm your mid 30's but it made me feel like crap. It's horrible!!

Ripeberry · 23/09/2010 18:29

I'm 41yrs old and my spots are as bad as ever. Worse still I'm getting wrinkles AND spots!
Aarghhh! Don't want to go on the pill though.

Mmm might just invest in that 'starter' pack of MD stuff. I think I have always focused on my spots and never noticed the rest of my skin, that now they have gone, I have suddenly realised that the rest of my face looks crap aswell!

Did buy the Clinique range designed for spots at one point and whilst it didn't help one bit with clearing up the spots, my skin felt fantastic and probably looked it too - it gave me an insight into how people, who don't have spots, live Grin

I don`t suffer but my poor husband has been covered in an acne rash for weeks, side effect of the trial chemo he is on, the unit gave him a course of antibiotics called tetracycline which has really helped!

I apologise if I am repeating earlier advice but I haven't read all the thread. This routine on acne.org is supposed to be very effective. I think there was a thread on here fairly recently that recommended the website.

I started getting acne at 22. It stayed with me on and off (some success with antibiotics/topicals/dianette for periods of time) until I was nearly 27 when it was AWFUL. Really bad. I learnt good make up skills would the one upside... So I went back on dianette. Spots did start to clear up well, slowly, but well. I also became very ill but remained undiagnosed until I nearly died from blood clots on my lungs.
Hmm.
When the doctor delivering the diagnosis was explaining about everything the first question I asked was 'Can I go on Roaccutane?'! I did and it was amazing. Seriously amazing. Side effects were very, very dry lips and extremely tired from late pm on. I took a lowish dosage for 5 months (as skin was already unflared due to dianette I do believe I was in a good position to take it).
When I was preggers had not great skin but not what I'd call acne. Post pregnant it didn't get better and then started to get worse. Actually due to the mini pill I discovered and now I am off that all pretty good now.
So my advice? Roaccutane all the way.
I have now heard that smaller doses and sometimes for longer periods of time is what derms are now recommending to minimize side effects.
Not having acne changed me so much.

My experience a bit like pommedeterre (without the blood clots!! - sorry to hear about that), Roaccutane was the business. I am sorry to read another poster tried it and it didn't work - I always thought it was the last-choice-but always-works route. But I did read all sorts about it being linked to depression and you really can't take it when pregnant, or have any chance of getting pregnant, it is hideous stuff and it totally f*ks over the rest of your skin whilst you are on it, as well as the spots. That was nearly 15 years ago and I've had no problems since other than the odd spot now and again which is fine by me.

dianette is very good for acne

alypaly · 03/10/2010 01:36

niacinamide gel 4% ,retin A and differin gel and cream are also very good.
