Contraception choices?

I have my 8 week post natal check this week and want to sort out contraception - we have been using condoms, which we both hate, since DS3 was born.

I am no spring chicken so don't really want to go on the combined pill again, I don't want another coil and I don't want long term contraception like implants/jab as we would like another baby at some point.

So this leaves the mini pill - I have never tried this - how effective is this and are there any horrid side effects?

I have just been removed from the combined pill at age 40 due to high blood pressure (also focal migraine) and started the minipill Cerazette about 6 weeks ago. When I looked into this it seems that the mini pill is very reliable in the 40+ age group, as reliable as the combined pill is for 25 year olds ie .3% failure rate, used correctly. Cerazette is probably more effective as it stops ovulation more reliably. From something I read a while ago, the minipill is more reliable when it disrupts or stops the cycle, less so if the cycle remains regular. I have headaches initially but they have gone now and I feel fine. I was planning to try the implant after trialing progesterone only, but I would consider staying on Cerazette now. Good luck.
