Bleeding from back passage - TMI!!!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 19/09/2010 14:15

On Thursday, I went to the toilet and lost alot of blood from my back passage. It wasn't just a small amount on the paper it was actually dripping into the toilet bowl.
It wasn't dark , it was bright red and had some small clots in.

The same thing happened again Friday and Saturday, minus clots.

I know this isn't normal and I'm too embarrassed to tell anyone I know. I'm plucking up the courage to go to the GP this coming week, if I can get in and just wondered if anyone had any experience of this and found out it was something simple like piles perhaps?

I've had that before, it was just piles. You should still get it checked though. I don't remember any clots though, just a lot of blood pouring out!

Please, please get this checked immediately. Most likely piles, but don't ignore it.

Did you have an extremely large bowel movement before this bleeding? Can you remember overstretching yourself? It would be a momentary sharp pain.

It is quite common to have an anal fissure, and you usually know when you have done it. When this happens, you can keep re-opening the wound so can take many days to heal.

If you have no recollection of injuring yourself with your BMs, then you definitely need to see a medic.

I had to phone NHS Direct for DH once, because his IBS was bad and he was bleeding. They said 'call an ambulance now!' Don't mess around with this. Get it sorted.

(DH did get it sorted btw and he is 100% fit and healthy now)

do you have anal pain with it?

generally (i work for NHS24) we'd want to get you assessed straight away to rule out anything serious.

borderslass · 19/09/2010 15:58

could be anything I had this after being constipated and ended up with a fissure/tear.

ManicMother7777 · 19/09/2010 17:00

Have had similar myself and was told by my GP that as a general rule, bright red means small tear/piles and comes from the far end of the digestive tract, i.e. the rectum, and is not usually serious. Darker blood comes from higher up the digestive tract e.g. colon or stomach and could be more serious.

Hi there,

Thanks for all you kind replies. I had no pain whatsoever and have had none since. The BM wasn't any bigger than is normal for me.

I did a quick google and am hopeful it is probably just piles as it is red, not dark. I will try to get in at the doctors this week and will report back.

Thank you all :)

Go, go go! Mine was rectal cancer. GPs had repeatedly fobbed me off as just saying "piles" but mine was serious. It's unusual in "younger" women but it does happen. Don't be embarrasses. They've looked at plenty of bums!
