Hi,
I spent the day with my friend and her 1 year old yesterday and she has just called to say she thinks he has German Measles......
He had a lot of rash yesterday but she said it was "just a rash".....
I think I had German Measles as a kid.....
Would that make me immune?
Freaking out

Yes it would give you a degree of immunity. Were you not immunised as a child though? Are you in the UK?
Phone NHS 24 and ask their advice.

belgo · 19/09/2010 10:39

Did you not have the rubella vaccine as a teenager at school?

And having it as a child would make you immune anyway. But if you are concerned, speak to your GP.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, and try not to worry, it's not even confirmed that he has German measles.

Thanks for the replies.
I am not in the UK.

I haven't told my family yet so don't want to call and ask what vaccines I had as a child....

Only bloody found out yesterday!!!!!

I have just looked up the symptoms online and he did have other symptoms too :(

Info here

Basically, the situation is this:

-If you are not immune to GM, and contract it, then there is a 90% chance of your baby being affected.

You can visit your GP, and have a blood test to establish your immunity status. All pregnant woman have the blood test at about 8-10 weeks anyway, so you would just be bringing it forward.

If you have had a baby before, you will have had a blood test then.

If you are immune to GM, then you can't catch it, so your baby can't be affected.

Please visit your GP Smile

Okay speak to your GP. I was concerned about picking up chicken pox in pregnancy as have never had it. Spoke to GP who said I probably had immunity to it anyway. He did a blood test to check and that was the case.

Can you speak to someone today? No point in stressing about it til tomorrow if don't need to.

QwertyQueen · 19/09/2010 10:57

I have had a baby before, but in the UK, so those results would be there...
I will see my GP tomorrow.
Haven't even had 24hours to celebrate without a bloody scare :(

in the UK they routinely test for rubella immunity when you are PG, if there were any issues you would have been told during your first PG. see your GP tomorrow, but try not to worry, I would be amazed if you were not immune.

MollysChambers · 19/09/2010 11:00

If you grew up in the UK then you've probably been immunised. As you've already had a baby in the UK you're immunity will have been tested, unless you refused the tests. You would have been told if there was an issue. I would be very surprised if you're not immune. Smile

You should be able to contact the hospital where your previous maternity care was in the UK and ask for the immunity results from your previous rubella testing. I did exactly that after an exposure scare in early pg with #2, and I was relieved to find I had a good level of immunity at that time meaning a very high chance of no problems.

tralaa · 19/09/2010 19:54

I used to work in a maternity unit, and if a woman was found to have low or no immunity to rubella she was immunised following delivery, so if nothing was said to you when you had your previous baby chances are you're ok but prob best to check just in case.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
