After doing wet combing every week for the past 6 weeks and still finding them every week (pretty sure someone at play scheme was passing them back) I resorted to Lyclear today. DD1 had hundreds [puke] dd2 had a few and DS had none. I have done my hair and found a few. With Dd1 I was combing through and getting 6-8 at a time out...... it was gross!!!
Am seriously thinking about getting her hair cropped!!

it's soooo annoying isn't it. especially when you finally get them clear and then some little oik at nursery gives it striaght back

ediemay · 04/09/2005 23:29

I'm sitting here scratching and itching now - they are such little bas**rds!

sparklymieow · 04/09/2005 23:34

Just annoying that I had to resort to Lyclear, it costs me £14.50 for 4 bottles of the stuff!! DD1 needed a whole bottle on her hair as it so long, DS and Dd2 needed half a bottle, I used one on me, and DH has a bottle for his hair...

Whats the betting that within 2 weeks of DD1 going back to school tomorrow she has them again!!???

you can't just comb the hair through once a week and expect them to be gone or not come back....
Combing kills the live ones adults, but it misses the babies, and of course the eggs then still have to hatch...

I recomment doing the hair through every third day in the bath, use lots of conditionerk, and always tie there hair back afterwards, another good tip is to use moose or hairspray , as the head lice don't like it.... but keep using conitioner. having ther hair cut off only helps with less hair to comb through, tieing it back is just as good.

Rachee · 05/09/2005 13:40

It's just one of those annoying patient things in life......

doing it often is the key to stop reproduction !!

AnnieSG · 05/09/2005 13:43

We had them on a constant basis for a year, when my eldest started school. In his second year, we started using original source mint and tea tree shampoo, just because we'd heard tea tree might help and we didn't have a single outbreak all last year. I don't want to tempt fate, but I think the combination of the strong mint smell and tea tree oil might have scared the little buggers away. Worth a try?

sparklymieow · 05/09/2005 13:51

I did use conditioner every week. At least I know they are clear now, DD1's hair was plaited and hairsprayed this morning.

Anniesg - we used the same shampoo (in the orange scent) for the same reason! And it really did seem to work but I can't find that variety anymore. Has it been discontinued? Am using an Alberto Balsam teatree conditioner now.

AnnieSG · 05/09/2005 14:18

Cupcakes, we just get it in Sainsburys. I know they do an orange and teatree one too.
They definitely haven't discontinued it. You could see if Original Source has a website and stockists list?

AnnieSG · 05/09/2005 14:43

..sorry, didn't realise you meant the orange one.

cupcakes · 05/09/2005 16:45

we use sainsburys too. I'll have another look this week.
Thanks!

twirlaround · 05/09/2005 16:55

AnnieSG · 05/09/2005 19:10

Noddyholder, you need a new name - Nitty Nora!!!

ellis35 · 05/09/2005 19:54

I am nit combing daily with conditioner (Loads of) and using T tree but is there anything that will remove the tiny eggs from the hair shaft. Eggs are so small and hair is so fine they are not budging. HELP PLEASE!

Nightynight · 05/09/2005 20:03

nitty gritty comb claims to remove eggs. I havent tried it myself yet, but someone round here must have.

debutante · 05/09/2005 20:55

I have found from bitter experience that derbac m is the best- anything that claims to kill them in hours won't do. I just only try and use it for real infestations not the odd asylum seeker. Depending on the colour of the hair, if you can see the eggs on the hair then I pull them out with tweezers. Sounds awful i know but my kids have hair like straw and loads of it. I do bribe them with a video and sweets whilst I do it. I think the more stuff you put on theier hair in the way of conditioner and gel etc the harder it makes for the critters to hang on. Make sure that your kids school have a clear policy for letting parents know otherwise you might as well give up.

crunchie · 05/09/2005 21:08

I was told thatnits lifes are approx 10 days from laying an egg for it to hatch and then be ready to lay again IYKWIM. Therefoe I did teh following with my younger dd. Bathtime conditioner de nit, then ON DRY HAIR de-egg the next day. I pull them off each hair with my fingernails. You are bound to miss a few, so I repeat this every other day for 10 days and it seems to work. Tea tree shampo and conditioner - sainsburys own brand about 80p a bottle - works a treat too. For some reason dd2 is the only one to catch them and dd1 doesn't seem to.

albosmum · 05/09/2005 21:25

Oh god just brought lyclear today found ds1 was crawling - (i am guilty of not checking over summer) -plus i have shaved his head - wet combed about 6 times but still finding 20 eggs a time

bonym · 05/09/2005 21:27

Nitty gritty comb is great - it really does get eggs out, although they are so tiny and there are usually so many that I've found it impossible to get them all out at once. Found that combing with conditioner EVERY day for a week is the only way to get rid of them.
