Vaginal Prolapse brought on by running?

hello, I know there are loads of threads on here about prolapse and they have been very informative but I've still got some questions you guys might be able to help me with.

I'll try to keep it brief! Yesterday I was at the gym merrily running on the treadmill, I decided to do a bit of a sprint finish and had a strange sensation in my nether regions, on inspection I think I've got a vaginal prolapse. I think I can feel my cervix about 3inches back (i.e can just feel it).

My DS is now 16m and I've not had a problem before (I've only just started running again, in the last couple of months), I had a loop incision procedure for CIN3 pre-cancerous cervical cells about 6 months ago, so have had various inspections down there and nothing has been mentioned (had a smear about 6 weeks ago). The surgeon said she had to take quite a lot of tissue away and asked about if I wanted any more children (which I would like to do if possible). At the time she said it should be possible but I would need to let the MW know as soon as I got pregnant in case the cervix opened too soon etc...

Do you think this is contributing to my problem? Will I need to stop running? Is this going to ruin my chances of having another baby? Is there anything I can do/they can do?...so many questions...!

I had a repair for prolapse and some year slater started jogging which made me feel "loose". went back to gyane and he said no running- put s a huge strain/impact on pelvic floor.

Doubt your op made any difference but maybe running is not goo.
I must admit I don't know how people like Paula Radford do it after 2 babies. Maybe they have PF made out of steel.

thanks purplepeony. Thats disapointing, to have to give up running, but if everything else will be ok, I guess its a small price to pay. Did you have anymore children after your treatment?

BTW I mean't loop excursion (not incision)

I had my op after DD 2. No more after her.

I was told to give up running by my gynae too. She said its the worst thing for women. I was very down about it but have now accepted it and altered my exercise regime. I would be delighed if someone could come along with evidenc to the contrary though as I do really miss it. In my heart of heart though I know what she was saying makes sense.

Yes it does seem to make sense. I've just looked at a runners forum and a number of people have said that they have had to have their uterus removed. The implication being that then they can continue running. I would like another baby so I don't think treatment is an option for me, other than pelvic floor exercises - but I did these after DS was born - and went to a special yoga class for postpartum and doesn't seem to have helped in this situation.

I've also read elsewhere that heavy bleeding is associated with prolapse, I've had really heavy periods since they came back, I've mentioned this to clinicians with regard to the cervix probs and been told its normal, but this month I'm mentruating at least a week early (ie only 2 weeks between), which is not normal for me - usually like clockwork. Did you find this?

A more optimistic message from me. I used to be about 3 stone overweight and had mild stress incontinence - couldn't do star jumps in the gym and always had to be certain to use loo before any sort of step/aerobics type classes. Discovered a couple of years ago that running and horse riding just resulted in fairly total loss of control.

This year I felt strangely complelled to run again, but had the same problem for the first couple of weeks, and bought some inco pads as I really didn't want to give up. After about a month the whole problem was cured, I can do star jumps! I can run and jump over stiles and even better my DH reports there is a noticable tightening up down there! As I had previously been advised I might have to think about a TV tape procedure I'm really pleased - and 3 stone lighter than I was in March. I wouldn't want anyone to ignore medical advice, but in my case the running really helped resolve what was becoming a problem for me.

thanks for your message notobvious - well done on your weight loss! Was your stress incontinence was caused by a prolapse? I would love to think running could correct my problem but all the stuff i've read seems to suggest that once something has prolapsed it won't go back (without surgery), but you can stop it getting worse by doing pelvic floor exercises. I don't think I'm overweight - although BMI is probably top end of the normal range.

I'm seeing the GP tomorrow but not particularly hopeful that she will tell me anything I don't already know.

I was rather surprised by my good fortune, would have thought that running might make it worse - just didn't want people to think running will ruin your nether regions automatically!!
