Slapped Cheek in Adults - Could I have this?

So, background is that last Friday I felt rubbish, the usual pre-cold sort of rubbish. Painful skin and just feeling generally pants. Had a temp of 39.5. Had an early night!

Saturday, felt much better although the start of a sore throat. Through this week, the sore throat has been horrendous, loads of throat ulcers. Went to the GP who said that it's a viral throat infection, nothing they can do. My throat has been incredibly painful but this morning it was a little bit better. Been taking loads of pain relief (soluble aspirin, paracetomol, ibuprofen, codeine) none of which touched the pain.

So today the sore throat is slightly eased to be replaced by a headache. Again, no pain relief is working on it. Then I noticed about three hours ago that my cheek is bright red. Feels slightly warm but not at all painful, in fact I sometimes forget about it and then catch myself in a mirror and it's still very bright red, almost slightly blotchy when you look close up. Just one cheek though.

I do have a baby (15 months) and have noticed the odd cheek on her being red and a slightly raised rash (not at all red though) on her body. She's had a cold but has also just cut a tooth so put it all down to that.

Not really too worried about me, but I've got a meeting with my boss next Wednesday and she's 7 months PG and I don't want to pass it to her.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I had slapped cheek as an adult. Adults tend to get a more extreme version than children. I had swelling of joints that was incredibly painful (prescription painkillers needed) and an unbelievable tiredness - it was actually quite frightening. My whole body had a dappled rash that you could actually see travelling down my body. Im not sure if this is a usual reaction - both my dd and ds had it but only had the rash and didn't feel unwell at all.

I believe it is not easy to diagnose early - mine was picked up as there was an outbreak in the area. One of my friends was sent to the hospital to be tested for arthritis because of the swelling pre rash.

Don't think I have actually answered your question but thought it might help to know some of the symptoms. Really hope you are ok.

Thank you tibni.

There was one other symptom that I forgot to mention, I have swollen glands in my neck, armpit and groin - eek!Hmm Sounds more like scarlet fever if I didn't only have the rash on my face - yikes!

Thank you again.

dawnAS ....i had slapped cheek (parvo B19) for 3 years before it was diagnosed. Caught it from DS2 but didnt realise it at the time. It made me so horrendously ill, i got ME/CFS with it. I had to go into hospital to get a transfusion of immunoglobulins as it had an awful affect on my joints and i had extreme fatigue with it.You can have a test for parvo B19 to prove or disprove it.

thumbwitch · 16/09/2010 23:59

oh good, alypaly came and told you about it - go back to the GP and ask if there is any possibility of it being slapped cheek and can you be tested for parvovirus B19 PLEASE.

alypaly · 17/09/2010 12:48

hi thumb!!!!!!!!!!

thumbwitch · 17/09/2010 23:52

hi alypaly - how are you doing now?

alypaly · 18/09/2010 20:58

was ok til i went for some tests on friday. Had to have a treadmill fitness test as i have been struggling walking uphill and going up the stairs.
Apparaently my blood pressure went so high during the test the consultant was about to stop it. But,i had to stop it as i was out of breath and my legs felt like lead.I dont feel ill, just dont feel like the old alypaly i knew 18 months ago.I dont know if its parvo virus to blame or recent pericarditis.

I reckon they are going to put me on a calcium channel blocker to bring my BP down.Sad

He said my smooth muscle was not relaxing during prolonged exercising so my blood pressure was just constantly increasing. It went up to 210/112 at 162 pulse rate after 12 minutes exercise. Stupid thing was,he said i was obviously fit as i went for 12 minutes on an increasing incline, but felt crap afterwards and it made this persistent cough worse.

Now GP is testing me for asthma and i have got to go and see cardiologist. He has advised me not to play badminton as i am a potential stroke candidate which i have to say has frightened me a bit. And annoyed me as I want to play for my county Sad Have got a practice tomorrow and dont know what to do. How are you.

Sorry OP for the takeover

thumbwitch · 19/09/2010 02:14

oh alypaly, that is really shit, so :( to hear that. I would imagine the pericarditis has had a large part to play in it but who knows how the parvo has affected it all.

From what I remember of playing badminton it is pretty aerobic, especially at near-county level, so you're probably best giving it a miss until you do see the cardiologist, just in case - you don't want to risk it all for a game, honestly.

Once you've seen the cardio and got a proper diagnosis/treatment regime, I'm sure you'll be able to get back into it - it's only a short break.

Hello - just wanted to say (and I know this is pretty obvious anyway) but if it's possibly slapped cheek then you should avoid your pregnant friend as it can be a bad thing to have while pregnant. Hope you feel better soon.
