Both are boys, Ds2 has long curly thick hair, ds1 has shorter straight thick hair - why is he repeatedly catching nits?

I pulled SO MANY out of his hair this morning. His brother only ever gets one or two.

You never quite get the last one?

I never had nits as a child, but my sister had them repeatedly.

She was blonde, and I was dark. Both had long hair.
She used to play 'hair dressers' with her friends more than I did.

We both used the same shampoo & washed our hair the same amounts.

I think they just prefer some scalps to others. Its weird.

bundlebelly · 14/09/2010 17:44

The lotions and potions don't work and cost a fortune. Your weapon of choice in the nit war needs to be the HAIRDRYER!!! Kills the eggs. It works.

colditz · 14/09/2010 17:52

I do use the hairdryer, I comb every morning, he just sometimes comes home riddled.

Maybe I should start combing him as soon as he finishes school...

I am well aware that the propaganda about them not living for long off the scalp is a pile of damnable lies - when I was a child, my brother and I captured one of my sister's head and put it under the microscope, and 6 hours later it was still wriggling around under the slide.

We ended up using head and shoulders together with the nitty gritty comb. It was the only thing that worked, and we'd spent a fortune on all the lotions with malathion and special shampoos etc.

Danthe4th · 14/09/2010 20:07

2 weeks of nit combing and squeezing the little blighters with tweezers every other night is the only way we found to get rid of them for good, and then friday night checking.

ppeatfruit · 15/09/2010 09:13

We conquered the little shxxs with pure tea tree oil. Put it round yr DS's ears etc. after clearing the eggs I promise you IT WORKS.

gramercy · 15/09/2010 13:31

Head lice have been driving me insane since the spring. The blighters have laughed in the face of Full Marks, Hedrin, the Nitty Gritty comb... everything. I tried Full Marks again last week but a week later the dcs are still absolutely infested, and I spent hours combing through their hair.

The pharmacist did say that people have been complaining that lice at the moment seem indestructible and the curent crop has built up a resistance to chemicals.

I might try that tea tree oil.

TheLifeOfRiley · 15/09/2010 13:34

Tea tree oil, I swear by it.

Bet your DS who catches them all the time has a child in his class riddled with them. Poor kid.

Why is it that just the very word nits makes me start scratching?? Hmm

Hassled · 15/09/2010 13:34

It's a mystery why nits seem to love particular children - DD basically had nits on and off for 2 years when she was younger. I'd clear them obsessively, they'd be back in no time. None of the other DCs have had more than the very occasional bout.

seeker · 15/09/2010 13:39

Soak their heads in Hedrin. Leave overnight. ash hair in the morning. Then, that evening comb with loads of conditioner and the Nitty Gritty for at least 30 minutes - longer if you can.

Comb again on the 3rd day and the 7th. Then comb weekly, and treat again if you get them again.

Are you doing everyone in the family on the same day? Yourself? DP?

Doesn't matter if ou can't see any - the baby ones are absolutely minute.

And apparantly people who are particularly prone to them have very slightly raised body temperatures compared to the rest of the population.

nitnurse1 · 20/09/2010 18:18

The most important thing is to make sure you get rid of every single nit otherwise they will re infest. Many parents are choosing natural alternatives to harsh chemicals, especially if they have had to re-treat several times during the year. More information can be found to help you get rid of nits naturally at www.nit-nurse.com/getridofnits.asp

borderslass · 20/09/2010 19:38

once you get rid use teatree shampoo on their hair.
