I think I have cracked something between my wrist and the base of my thumb- v painful but not obviously moving- should I bother the gp or will it self splint and heal ok? Thanks if you have any experience!

yes - go get an xray. Those bones don't heal very well, and can cause arthritis if not set properly

Sounds like you need scaphoid views. The scaphoid is the bone at the base of your thumb, and breaks there can be hard to pick up on normal wrist x-rays.

Stick your thumb up as though you are going to hitch a lift. At the base you will feel two tendons extending down your wrist. Your scaphoid is under there, between the tendons.

Can be quite tricky to heal if not dealt with, and easy to break.

Yes, do. Called your scaphoid bone and if not treated properly you can get a numb thumb for the rest of your life.

Nooooo, please don't leave it. If the bone dies then you basically can't use that hand. The scaphiod is the one under the thumb, it's quite a large bone and does often snap in half, it's a sod to repair so please don't leave it.
Go to A&E, they may not be able to tell right away so be prepared to go back in 10 days for some more x-rays.

A finger is different, so is a toe, you can strap them. There's bones in your hand called the carpel bones, if you break one of these and it's not sorted then it knackers the hand, especially the scaphiod as it's one of the 2 bones that are on the top of the radius and ulna.<a class="break-all" href="//www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=visual.merriam-webster.com/images/human-being/anatomy/skeleton/hand.jpg&imgrefurl=qwickstep.com/search/bones-in-the-human-hand.html&usg=__rzoVV1qNuRNn0VoFBzl84BSPgC0=&h=384&w=550&sz=82&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=T-GBIW4BO1ealM:&tbnh=133&tbnw=175&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbones%2Bin%2Bthe%2Bhand%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26biw%3D1271%26bih%3D608%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C3&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=225&vpy=313&dur=3944&hovh=188&hovw=269&tx=134&ty=134&ei=VnOOTOS0BYXNswb-0e3PAQ&oei=VnOOTOS0BYXNswb-0e3PAQ&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:16,s:0&biw=1271&bih=608" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">see here Off to A&E you go.
