Any doctors out there?

Dad has just been diagnosed with Osteopenia. His mum had osteoarthritis. I can't find any definitive info on line as to whther it's hereditary or not and I can't get into my GP until Friday. So, in the meantime, I was wondering if any MNers knew anything about it or had any experience?

I do eat cheese, butter etc (in moderation) but really hate milk. I eat egg yolks but the whites make me feel ill and I don't particularly like oily fish.

I don't smoke (and never have), drink moderately now, exercise 5 days a week and have recently lost 2 stone - goal to lose about 4.5 to 5 stone overall.

Is it worth bothering my GP - all the websites talk about bone density scans and I'd rather not waste NHS money if it's not necessary.

TIA

osteopenia is different to oesteoarthritis.
osteopenia is thin bones, if very thin or a fracture occurs then it's osteoporosis.

risk factors for osteopenia/porosis include smoking, being very thin/anorexic, xs alcohol, some medical conditions eg rheumatoid arthritis, poor calcium intake in diet, long term steroid use, not using limbs.

So you should be OK. There are quite strict guidelines for bone density scans, and you don't need one on what you've said.

Thanks Cass - that's absolutely brilliant.
