I have recently come off the pill as a I just couldnt tolerate it any more (breast pain and very reduced libido), and not sure where to go from here.

I am keen for something very effective, and the idea of something permament doesnt bother me (or DH) (Our family is complete).

I dont want anything hormone based, as disliked the side effects of everything I have tried. I also dont want a traditional sterilisation, as the failure rate of that is too high for me to want to have an operation to achieve.

I have previously had the mirena coil, but had to have that removed after 2 weeks of horrible cramping.

As far as I can see the options are:

Try mirena again - is it likely that the cramping would re-occur though? I know that it does have hormone effect, but hope that smaller dose would make it OK?

Traditional IUD - but if I had cramping with mirena would I be just as likely to have it with a traditional IUD?

Essure - I like the idea of this due to the ease of getting it done. How available is it in the UK? Do many areas offer it on the NHS? How much does it cost to have it done privately?

DH to have vasectomy - He is happy to do this, though slightly nervous as all his friends who have had it done have had problems with post-op infections - is that normal? The possibility of chronic post vasectomy pain is also a concern.

Many thanks to anyone who has managed to read all through this, and would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Thanks Smile

If your family is definitely complete I would get DH in for the snip. Risk of complications is small, as is long-term pain afterwards. It's more reliable and less invasive than female sterilisation too. Why don't you both have a joint appointment with your GP to discuss your options?

Thanks for your advice. It does seem to be the most straightforward option. For me anyway! Grin
