2 levels are usually measured: Free T4 which normal range is 15-24, and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) which is usually between 0.5 and 5. If The TSH is the level she's talking about its normal. But the receptionist shouldnt be taking responsibility for giving you advice re your result. Ring back and ask for the GP to ring and explain them properly.

Thank you. I am waiting on a friend letting me know as she has a chart and I will be ringing on Monday for an appointment. To ask for it to be done again do I need to see a GP or can I just go and ask the nurse to do it? TIA.

I would speak to the GP, preferably the same one who ordered the test. They probably wouldnt want to repeat it unless the result was borderline. I would expect the thyroid test to be amongst others such as full blood count, liver function test, electrolytes etc, so they will look at all of them together, plus your symptoms, to build a picture of what may be wrong and recommend a course of action from there.

A nurse can certainly do a form and take the blood, but I doubt they would without instructions from a GP.

Hope its all ok for you.

I remember I had a full blood count and liver function as well.

The GP will have looked at the result and put a note on it to tell you, so the note he has put is 'normal'
I am assuming you asked for the value as normally that wouldn't be given

It is completely normal for a receptionist to give you your result, as long as the ordering clinician has viewed and filed it. If GPs had to give all blood/ test results out they would never be able to see any patients!

If following the test result you still have concerns go back to whomever ordered the test for another appointment.

My problem is all my tests come back fine but I know there is something wrong as I spend a lot of time feeling poorly.

Yes all pretty standard tests for unexplained tiredness/lethargy/general rundown-ness. They will be looking for inflammatory markers showing a possible current or previous viral infection, the thyroid test is just one thing to rule out. Sounds like its probably not that TBH otherwise the doc would have called you him/herself.

Dont be surprised if theres no quick answer as these tests are usually only an indicator of something which you may need more tests for, or may mean you had some viral thing, which left its mark and has now or will soon go away.

You do need to go back then Sorrento
Book an appointment at the start of afternoon surgery (usually about 2pm) with a sympathetic doctor and talk to them

Maybe write down all your symptoms and take them with you?
FWIW I come from a family with at least 2-3 hypothyroid patients in every generation and every symptom of it- even hair loss- but always test 'normal', so I do understand.

I have also put a lot of weight on and no matter what I do can not lose it or I might lose a few pounds but then they go straight back on even if still eating carefully and exercising. I feel dizzy a lot, see things floating around in the air and my vision is compromised at times. If this is my lot, fine, but I want to make sure there is nothing I can do to improve things as it is really affecting my time with my husband Sad. I manage the kids fine most of the time but by the time DH gets home I am shattered.

Sounds rubbish. Really hope your doc finds something to go on. Definitely do what dreamteamgirl says and write it all down for the GP. Wish you well for monday.
