ive had this before a couple of months back and it lasted three days and then just dissappeared (sp?)

its not so much throbbing, but like a stabbing pain just in one side of my head.

it started yesterday dinnertime and got so bad the pain was coming about every 10 seconds.

painkillers didnt touch it but it slowed down a bit when i lay on the sofa. as soon as i got back up it started again.

my scalp was really sore and even just putting my hair behind my ears brought it on.

that carried on for hours until i lay down again, after an hour on the sofa i suddenly felt this wierd shift, going up from both sides of my jaw to my temples and suddenly the pain was gone.

just felt very washed out and dizzy then.

ive had a few more twinges (yes, ive been up all night) and have realised that every time its come since, its been when im biting at my lip (something i do often along with grinding my teeth).

lot of probably useless info there but i want to work out what it is and what will get rid of it if it starts again later...it was agony!!

only way i can really explain it was it felt just like having a contraction...but in my head!! (same kind of sudden OW factor!).

doesn't sound like a migraine to me as normally a migraine is accompanied by visual disturbance / light sensitivity / nausea (some or all of them anyway)

sounds like a stress reaction to me .. have you been especially stressed?

but, personally I'd make a doc's appointment and explain the symptoms and get it checked

mumtosomeone · 02/09/2005 07:59

go to see the DOC!!!!

nightowl · 02/09/2005 08:06

i went last time to the doc (after three sodding days of it!!) but she said there was nothing wrong and gave me painkillers..after that it went on its own.

just need to stop it really or try and prevent it...not good being confined to the sofa when baby wants to play and is jumping on my head

Your jaw might be misaligned. A dentist might be more help than the doctor, they can make a gum shield type gadget that you wear at night to gently realign it.

spacecadet · 02/09/2005 18:26

stgeorge is right, i suffer from a condition known as temporal mandibular joint syndrome, your synptoms sound similar, try googling it, your dentist will be better at identifying it, you may have a slight misalignment, or it could be inflammation, either way, you will have a bite guard, or clip made for you, the clip you wear all the time, the bite guard, usually at night. however, go to your doctors and get other things ruled out, temperal arteritis can cause the tenderness in the temple area.

Littlefish · 02/09/2005 19:42

I wear a mouth guard at night (not very sexy!) because I grind my teeth really badly. Before I got it, I used to get really bad aches in the sides of my head, and the jaw "hinge" area. Perhaps you could see either your dentist, or a cranial osteopath. It only took 2 appointments with the osteopath to sort mine out for several months. Unfortunatly, the osteopath moved away from the area and I've never found one quite as good.

jampots · 02/09/2005 19:48

it does sounds stress related. Do you ever feel your scalp "crawl" as though you've got a v tight swimming cap on? That too is stress related apparently

suedonim · 02/09/2005 21:35

I get similar feelings to you, Nightowl, and it is def migraine in my case. I had quite a bad migraine yesterday and have been getting the pain you describe for most of today. But it's worth checking out your jaw alignment etc as well.
