Have been to nurse yesterday to be told she doesnt do family planning aspects only general, cant see female doc till monday and am going out of my head with pain and worry, dont know which is worse.since the beginning of the week i have been developing pain down below,i am peeing every 5 mins only dribbles, defo not pregnant though and its not stingy to wee.The pain is inside kindof at my womb and i have this heavy feeling, the only way i can descibe it is as if i were wearing a tampon and it was soaked and needing changed(sorry not great desciption i know). The pain is excruciating at the end of my urine stream when it feels as though my insides are coming out with the end of the wee and i have a bearing down sensation like when delivery baby,it really feels as thogh i am being turned inside out.

I have a male doctor who i would rather die than let examine me hence why i went to the nurse,my surgery wont let me see a female doctor as my gp is not conected to the practice and so his patients can only see him,the best they could offer was to wait till monday when my g.p goes on leave as his locum is going to be female.

Meanwhile i have to bear this pain till then ,dreading every time i need to wee,and worrying that ive got cancer or going to need surgery to fix something,im on my own with three kids and worry what will happen if anything happens to me,i cant sleep am so stressed out knowing that im going to have to wait till monday so am turning to you experts, does anyone have any idea what this could be? i thought maybe a prolapse of some kind but would that cause pain oh and fresh red bleeding even though im mid cycle and have never spotted in my whole menstual life,im 26 so feel kinda young for it to be a prolapse but what else?

No real advice but try ringing NHS direct.
Could it be cystitis? In the meantime I'd drink LOTS of fluids. But NHS should put your mind at ease and point you in the right direction

WideWebWitch · 01/08/2003 08:24

loobie, it could be a urine infection or cystitis or something but you really do need to see a doctor. He may well not need to examine you for this though, he may well just want the symptoms. Why won't your surgery let you see a woman doctor? You cannot go on like this til Monday, ring them back and get an appointment asap today. If it is an infection very likely your doctor will be able to give you something that will sort it out quickly. Even if he does need to examine you, please please just grit your teeth and let him do his job - you've had children, so, horrible as it is, surely it's not going to be as undignified as childbirth. Don't know if that thought helps! You are panicking unnecessarily I'm sure but I know the feeling of getting something out of proportion when you're worried. Please make an appointment.

magnum · 01/08/2003 08:39

Hi loobie, I've had a similar thing and it turned out to be cystitis. I didn't have the bleeding (although it can cause this) but all the other symptoms you described were similar. You should definately see any doctor asap to put your mind at rest as like you, I was imagining all sorts. If you really don't want to see the male doctor (although I think you should) and would rather wait until Monday I found cranberry capsules (which you can get from a health food shop) really worked well. NHS direct is another good option for you as I've always found them really helpful. Good luck

2under2 · 01/08/2003 08:40

Loobie, get yourself off to the doctor's!! If it is cystitis you won't even need 'examining'. Take a wee sample which they can test there and then. If that is clear and you do need an internal you could always break down and cry there and then and hopefully they'll get a female doctor to do it out of sympathy?!
You don't want to mess with whatever it is - my aunt lost a kidney after not bothering to go to the doctor when she got bad cystitis.

Loobie · 01/08/2003 08:47

wouldnt cystitis or a urine infecton cause stinging when weeing which i dont have.I was abused when younger so there is no way i would let a male doctor examine me even in my maternity notes it was stated no male docs,i tried to tell the receptionist this but she still insisted i see my own g.p,so i dont think there is any way i they would give me a female g.p as i was stood yesterday explaining myself to a bloody docs receptionist crying my eyes out while there was a queue of people behind but still no must see own g.p.Will try ringing nhs direct,is it available in scotland?whats the no.?

0845 4647
As far as I'm aware it's available in Scotland.
If a bloke answers, ask to speak to a female or just hang up and redial.

WideWebWitch · 01/08/2003 08:59

Loobie sorry if I was dismissive, I now understand why you don't want to see a man. Tell dragon receptionist you want to speak to the practice manager. Explain to the practice manager, make a fuss, get to see a woman today. Cystitis can turn into a kidney infection and get painful in the way you describe v quickly (I've had it, no exam to diagnose) but gets better equally fast with treatment.

2under2 · 01/08/2003 10:52

Loobie whenever I've had really bad cystitis it felt more like what you describe rather than stinging when peeing.
Just take some wee in - the practice nurse can test it.
I agree with www - talk to the practice manager if you can - you must get this sorted out.
It sounds just horrid and I am sorry that you are in such a crappy situation with your surgery etc., whilst dealing with being poorly.

Janstar · 01/08/2003 11:17

I am disgusted that your doc's receptionist treated you this way - who does she think she is? I would most definitely insist on seeing a female doc and do not leave the surgery until you do. Then I would make a complaint about the receptionist. It is too easy for these people to bully patients who are not feeling well enough to be assertive.

mears · 01/08/2003 11:34

Loobie - this sounds very much like a urine infection to me. It does not need to sting all the way through when you pee - it is at the end that it is so painful - just the way you describe. You do not have to be examined down there at all. Take a specimen with you in a sterile bottle. I don't understand the set-up here of the practice. Change your GP and your problem will be permanently sorted. You can easily change your GP by going to the practice that has the female doctor and ask to be seen as a temporary patient. Tell them that you are wanting to attend this practice as you need to have a female GP. You will then be asked to fill in a form. If you have a urine infection you will need antibiotics which means you will still need to see a GP. That is what NHS direct will advise. It might be cystitis and you can get treatment for that over the counter from a chemist. Your urine needs tested though. Try and see a GP at the other practice. Let us know how you get on.

Teletubby · 01/08/2003 13:12

I agree that it sounds like a urine infection and would demand to see a doctor as they can get quite nasty if left (the infection not the doctor!). Meanwhile drink loads and loads and loads of water. I have had loads of similar infections and have never been examined by a doctor for the symtoms you describe so don't worry that the doctor is male. Urine infections don't always have to sting (that's normally cystitus) but they do give you that awful pulling down heavy pain and frequent need to hop on and off the loo.

wobblymum · 01/08/2003 13:32

It sounds like you really need to see someone straight away. If your surgery won't help, go to the emergency section of your local hospital. They won't mind, especially if you explain why you can't go to your GP and at least you'll definitely be able to be seen by a female doctor there. They can do all the things a GP can and if it is something serious, you're in the right place. If not, at least your mind will be at ease. Don't force yourself to wait just because of a bad surgery, I would definitely go to your nearest hospital as soon as you can.

Loobie · 01/08/2003 19:29

Thanks everyone for the advice,i also spoke to a friend who had chronic urine infections and she agrees thats what it sounds like.i bought some cystopurin from boots and have been taking that, am starting to feel better already, will take this over the weekend and keep gp appointment for monday,if the pain gets worse again i htink i will just go to our local a&e.Will tackle the surgery when i feel better.

Drink as much Lemon Barley Water as you can - the headmistress at school told me this when I was really poorly and had to be sent home - it really does work and she should have known as she was a NUN!! (Apparently flat leonade also works!!)

Tissy · 02/08/2003 09:30

Drink Cranberry juice too- it contains something that prevents the bugs sticking to the bladder lining, therefore making it easier to flush them out.

Wobblymum-if Loobie turns up at A+E with a UTI, not only may she get a ticking off from the triage nurse for not seeing a GP, but there won't necessarily be a female doctor there- you just have to see who's available at the time. Many casualty departments are having to be fairly strict now about who they see in order to keep to the waiting time targets. True, they can't actually turn you away, I think, but if they don't think your problem is an emergency, they can give you low priority. By doing this, they make sure that people don't use A+E as an alternative to the GP. (Many people do, unfortunately; we've had people turn up at our local A+E department for repeat prescriptions, because they forgot to get one from the GP). The A+E nurses won't mind a phone call first to discuss if the visit is appropriate, and may well be sympathetic and tell you to come, they would also know if the department is busy or quiet and whether there is a female doctor on duty!

Boe · 02/08/2003 09:40

You can alos pee in the shower with the water running over you - that helps me!!

janh · 02/08/2003 10:13

Or get a clean squeezy bottle (eg empty washing-up liquid) and fill it with lukewarm water and squirt that at yourself as you wee - I have done that and it dilutes it as it comes out (doesn't stop the discomfort and pressure inside unfortunately!)

I had a urine infection this week and was able to get a prescription over the phone, but the receptionist always asks if I've had it before - I think if you haven't they do need a urine sample just to make sure. They can either do a dipstick test at the surgery to confirm that there is something there, or they can send it away for a complete test to find out exactly what the organism is and may change the antibiotic afterwards.

Holly02 · 02/08/2003 10:59

Loobie it sounds like it might be a urinary tract infection or something similar. Have it treated as soon as you can, I had one about 12 years ago which I thought had cleared up on its own, and I ended up several months later with a kidney infection. Not serious, it was treated with antibiotics but it was quite painful at the time.

I have an absolute foolproof remedy for urinary tract infections - years ago I used to get them from time to time, and now I have not had one for 12 yrs (since the last one). The answer is to make sure that you urinate immediately after having sex - IT TRULY WORKS. It's annoying sometimes to have to get out of bed and go to the toilet after sex, but I honestly have not experienced one problem since I started doing this.

HTH Loobie, good luck with everything.

Loobie · 02/08/2003 13:50

well after thinking that the cystopurin was doing the trick i woke at 12 last after only being in bed an hour in the most excruciating pain across my lower abdomen and up both sides of me and across my back.fell over after heaps of pain killers at 2.30am then woke at 7 with pain again,i went to our local a&e which was empty so was seen and discharged within 40 mins with "rip-roaring urine infection".Given anti-b's for 3 days and if still there will see doctor on monday.
