Caesarian scars - anyone else feel a gap in theirs?

Had my caesarian 16 months ago and over the past few months I can feel a real gap under the scar. I'm worried that the muscle etc. hasn't rejoined properly (so technical eh! ). The scar healed fine and I'm otherwise fit and well, it doesn't stop me playing hockey!
Doesn't cause me any bother but it concerns me if this might have implications for a future pregnancy. Anybody else experience anything like this?

To be honest I've never poked & prodded my scar enough to find out if there is a gap underneath (I've had 2 sections - the last one at New Year).

I just tried feeling for a gap but can't really tell.

I have a friend who's wound didn't heal for ages but it was really obvious - she was bleeding (vaginally not from the wound itself).

I would say if you are worried then get it checked but I do think it takes a long time for your body to get back to 'normal' and I would have thought you would have noticed other signs if there was a real problem. I'm no expert though.

When I weas pregnant the 2nd time the only thing the Consultant said re. previous section was that they wouldn't induce me and wouldn't allow me to go overdue - too much pressure on the wound. However, when it came to due date the Registrar had no problem agreeing to me going a week over and other friends in the same position had Consultants who didn't bat an eyelid at a previous section.

my stomach muscles still ahve a gap in them(4y later) I aske the dr and she said it wasn't unusual. Also my scar still has a hole which never healed completly which isn't normal but there isn't really anything to do with it.
If you are worried ask your GP.

Re further pregnancies I had my second 21 month(recommended 2 years+) later and was allow to have a 42 hour labour until I begged for a section

My recorder teacher at school still had a gap in her stomach muscles - and her youngest child was 9yrs old!

I had a CS with DS1. He was 3yrs and 3 months old when I had DS2.......induced!

Thanks for that! I think when the time arrives for us to begin TTC, I will talk to my GP about it.
By the way, can anyone tell me what AF and BFP stand for?!

My mum had me by caesarian.... ** years ago hee hee can't tell ya me age. But 30 yrs on it still bleeds for a period of time every year..... the gp says it is psychosamatic (ok i spelt it wrong)because at the same time she gets all symptons of bronchitis but without any trace of it.
Mum was in hosp for a while b4 she had me with brochitis.... but she doesn't worry anymore it clears up on my birthday lol

AF is Auntie Flo i.e. what we used to call the Curse
no idea for BFP

nooka · 01/09/2005 23:08

What does a hole feel like? I have poked at mine, and to be honest I have no idea what it should feel like! I had dd 16 mths after ds, and was induced (ended up with c-section number two).

highlander · 02/09/2005 07:36

not around the scar, but my tummy muscles are still separated round my belly button. I had a slight umbilical hernia for a while.

As an aside - has anyone's belly bottom gone from a complete 'inny' pre-preg to a total 'outy' post-preg?

Twiglett · 02/09/2005 07:42

AF - Auntie Flo = menstruation
BFP - Big Fat Positive (pregnancy test)
BFN - Big Fat Negative

Twiglett · 02/09/2005 07:43

no holes in or under my scar after 2 c-sections, but assume its nothing to worry about

CaptainCavemansMummy · 02/09/2005 10:12

Thanks for the codes! Am a relative novice on mn
The hole feels like the muscle (or fat, lol) stops, then 1cm dip, then the muscle/fat again. Can't really feel anything in the dip. As I said, I'm not really worried about it and am reassured that some people have experienced something similar.

Highlander - what's a "belly bottom" ?

I had my daughter by Caesarian 10 months ago and, crazily, am thinking about starting to try for no 2. However, I didn't realise that I was meant to leave a certain amount of time before I 'went for it' - Nikkie mentions it. Does anyone know more about this?

ruty · 02/09/2005 16:08

my c section scar is very itchy 12 months on - that's all i can say! and my tummy protrudes over it.

nooka · 02/09/2005 21:10

Bloomsbury, I was told by the senior midwife that I should have left a year before getting pregnant(as I was in labour at the time, with an 8mth gap it was a bit late!). I have also heard people saying that there should be a two year gap. However I don't think I've had any health problems from a shorter gap - it was just very hard work at the time!
