Why am I getting so many bruises?

Over the last few months I've noticed loads of bruises on my legs. Most of them were not caused by crashing into things as far as I can recall - they seem to spring up from nowhere.

I keep getting big purple bruises on my thighs and blue ones on my lower legs.

The only change in terms of my health was going on the pill a few months ago (Dianette).

Any suggestions as to what's causing it?

could you be aneamic?

I would go to your GP and ask for a full blood count - it could be a few things, low platelets sometimes causes bruising.

I get loads of bruises all the time, again mostly on my legs. I was diagnosed with anaemia last winter, but I felt awful then, giddy, nauseous etc. The problem goes back years and i feel fine most of the time, and have mostly returned negative results for anaemia. i've got seven bruises at the moment! I don't worry about it.

Hmmm thanks for the responses. I would be extremely surprised if I anaemic - I eat a fair amount of red meat and green veg, take a multivitamin and had very light periods.

I haven't really got any of the other stuff that goes along with anaemia.

Go to the doctor and have a blood test. It's actually quite important that you do- it's quite out of ordinary to be getting bruises like that- aneamia is one thing that springs to mind, but also leukemia. Don't want to scare you- it probably isn't that, but you should get it checked pronto.

You should go to your GP and get it checked. About 10 yrs ago I went to my GP as I was covered in bruises, he took a blood test, I was diagnosed with Immunethrombocytopaenia (try saying that after a glass or two of wine:))

This is when your platelets drop to a very low level. I had no other symptoms and felt fine. Im not suggesting this is what you have got but worth getting it checked.

Between anaemia and leukaemia are a whole host of blood disorders which are not immediately life threatening but which do need monitoring and treating (to avoid haemorrhages or clots) so definitely go see your doc.

You should def go to the doc and get it sorted out.

I have a very minor blood disorder that was discovered after I went to the docs with huuuuge bruises that took ages to disappear. I had blood test and this minor thing showed up. I was told that it wouldn't need treating unless it got much worse, and this was just a message left with the results.

I went to a kinesiologist and she found a blood disorder too, and gave me some mega strength vitamin c tablets as apparently I wasn't absorbing enough vitamin C. Every so often I get a bit run down and these bruises come up, so I take vit C tablets and it all settles down again.
