Migraine - anyone had any success in stopping them

Used to get them only on 2/3 day of periods. Since having 2 kids in quick succession I've only had a couple in the last 2 years but now I have a humdinger. DS is 7 months old. Are the hormones getting back to normal or could it be some food trigger? Either way, I'm trying feverfew, Vit B stuff and then will try migraleve if that doesn't work. Migraines with a lively toddler and a wailing baby don't go.

I spent years trying to work out why I got mine Pagan and eventually the doc suggested that it was probably more due to the fact that I don't have the best posture in the world. I have since started sitting straight and not slouching all the time and I also get regular massages. I have managed to half the amount of migraines I get now. They are still sometimes triggered by differences in lighting or when I get really stressed and emotional.

Yours are possibly hormone related though if you used to get them round your period.

Even if they have nothing to do with your posture it's always a good excuse for a massage!

Have you tried acupuncture? It's supposed to be good for hormone/migraine stuff.

I had terrible migraines until I came off the pill and made sure I drank at least 2 litres of water every day. I haven't had one for about 2 years now.

Get some of the triptan drugs. They are wonderful! (Sumatriptan, naratriptan, etc.)

kbaby · 01/09/2005 20:39

I stopped the pill and my migraines went. I did get very bad headaches just after having DD and get them now if I havent eaten or drunk much or even if my daily routine is different ie day off work.

a bag of frozen peas on the back of your head/neck shrinks the blood vessels and really helps mine

DP suffers quite badly - he now downs a can of coke at the onset and they go within about half an hour. (Anything with a decent amount of caffeine works - he just doesn't like coffee)

My DH suffers with migraines too - he had a bad one last week that took him four days to get over. Will he go to the doc? Nope.

I had some regular sessions with an osteopath quite some years back. I was getting about 10 a year with each one lasting about 2 days. Gradually they got fewer and fewer and weaker and weaker and now, I couldn't tell you when I had the last one.
(I used to get blurred vision and my speech was affected quite badly. Just thought I'd mention that as I guess different types of migraine respond to different types of treatment.)
Good luck woith getting it sorted.

biglips · 01/09/2005 21:53

my DP suffered terrible from migraines esp when the weather is changing and he used to threw up violently, but hadnt done since he started to take Voltarol as it a tab that relaxed your nerves so his migraine doesnt come on (if he catch it in time as sumetimes he doesnt have a warning!!)

calvemjoe · 01/09/2005 22:24

I have managed to stop mine by taking migraine preventors but have to come off them soon and get up to 3 a day. when I do get them I take triptan drugs but also have to hand my ds over to someone else to look after cause once I stop being sick I pass out for a couple of hours.

Vaunda · 01/09/2005 22:28

I have now had a migraine for 3 weeks, Dr has prescribed me a drug called propranolol which i take 3 a day every day in the hope that i won't get anymore migraines well they working so far.
If i do get one i have to take another drug called Metoclopramide which stop sickness etc.

BadgerBadger · 01/09/2005 22:40

Arsenicum works for me, a homeopathic remedy. One pill and it goes, the relief's fantastic!

They're hormone related for me too, I think. Ever since I took a course of clomid when TTC, I've had problems with migraines.

Pagan · 02/09/2005 10:56

Thanks folks - shall give some of these a go. Calvemjoe - you poor thing. Mine aren't that bad.

Hi

I used to get mine really badly, start with blurred vision, loss of speech, followed by numbness down my left hand side, when that eased the headache and vomitting came, always took 2 days to get over.

Had a brain scan etc and nothing wrong, my doctor prescribed my a tablet called Imigram - I took it twice and in 10 years I have 3 migraines - one with each pregnancy and one a few weeks ago when I know I didn't get enough sleep.

A friend who also needed Imigram swore by it too

starlover · 10/09/2005 17:02

yes!
i used to get them a couple of times a month. full on with aura, blind spots, vomiting... the works

went to see a cranial osteopath. didn't have one for over 2 years!
