I've got a piece of crisp stuck in my throat - any ideas how to get rid of it?

It hurts a little but more than that, it's uncomfortable and I want to get rid of it asap.
I'm drinking some hot tea to try and soften it, coughing hasn't done any good. I guess I could try and make myself sick but I HATE being sick so that will be my last resort.

Any ideas gratefully received.

TIA

I think it will melt won't it? Keep up the hot liquids. Lots. Just keep sipping I think.

NorbertDentressangle · 03/09/2010 19:36

I'm sure that I've read somewhere that chewing and swallowing bread helps.

I'm not medically trained or anything though....just someone who reads stuff on the internet and vaguely recalls it at a later date Smile

TequilaMockinBird · 03/09/2010 19:38

I may be wrong or this may be an old wives tale but, dont they recommend eating bread if you get a fish bone stuck in your throat? Might also work with a crisp?

I cant even spell dcotor so this isnt medical advice!

TequilaMockinBird · 03/09/2010 19:38

Grin NorbertDentressangle, looks like we read the same internet crap sites!

Coca · 03/09/2010 19:39

I'd go with cold drinks incase you scratch your throat

Dione · 03/09/2010 19:39

Try drinking fizzy drink straight from the bottle.

JorrisBohnson · 03/09/2010 19:39

Eat more crisps in the hope of moving it along?

Drink gallons of water, gulp it to dislodge the bit of crisp.

Massage your throat at the point where you think the crisp is. On the outside, obviously.

NorbertDentressangle · 03/09/2010 19:40

Grin Tequila -we obviously 'trained' at the same med school

TequilaMockinBird · 03/09/2010 19:40

try here OP

KurriKurri · 03/09/2010 19:41

I've heard eating bread is a good idea too Tequila. Are you certain its still there OP? - It could be that the crisp has scratched your throat and that is what is hurting, in which case it may be uncomfortable for a day or so.

TequilaMockinBird · 03/09/2010 19:41

Grin ND

Coca · 03/09/2010 19:42

Love how much us "mums" are caring about this Grin

mckenzie · 03/09/2010 19:54

thank you SO much! What a response. I'm drinking hot water now and if that doesn't work I will try the bread. I think it is an actual piece of crisp kurrikurri - please don't ask me why i think that, it just feels like it. It's actually making me gag a bit too - something so simple yet is causing me so much grief huh?? Off to boil the kettle again and rummage through the bread bin Smile

Soft bread. Works with fish bones, it should work with a crisp...

aliasdictus · 03/09/2010 19:56

Surprisingly toast has been reported as being effective. Kurri is correct, often a foreign body will scratch the lining of the lower gullet so although the thing has passed on, it still feels as if it were there. It should settle overnight although it can be quite unpleasant.Sad

southeastastra · 03/09/2010 19:59

agree with the scratch thing too, works the same when you get something in your eye and can't leave it alone but it's a scratch

do you think red wine would help??

OP posts:
southeastastra · 03/09/2010 20:10

most defintely

RespectTheDoughnut · 03/09/2010 20:15

Red wine is definitely approved for such treatment.

mckenzie · 03/09/2010 20:53

oh dear, I think you guys were right about it being a scratch and I was wrong. I just had tried the toast suggestion and now it hurts more than ever. Back to soothing hot water for me (and wine of course Smile)

you'll just aggrevate it, try to ignore it

BudaisintheZONE · 03/09/2010 21:30

Lots of red wine. And may e a spoonful of honey?

puzzlepetal · 03/09/2010 21:36

Don't want to scare you but you could damage your oesophagus. If it was me I would go to A&E and get it removed. There are case reports of oesophageal tears from sharp edged snacks. Potentially dangerous.

mckenzie · 04/09/2010 18:34

um, not sure what it is now but it's more painful today than yesterday Confused.

It feels rather like when you get swollen glands but then, the pain tends to be to the side and you can feel the gland when you touch the skin on your throat. But this is central in my throat and I can't feel anything from the outside.

Does this still sound like a scratch from a sharp crisp do you think?
