DH has just realised he's taken 200mg overdose of Ibuprofen in 18 hours...is this a cause for concern?

TIA

not a doctor but what do you mean by 200mg overdose - 200mg over what the otc packet says? How much has he taken, becasue you can safely take more than the otc packet doses.

gonnaloseit · 03/09/2010 00:58

Not sure as not a doctor but give NHS 24 a call just to check.

blinks · 03/09/2010 00:58

you can take 200-400mg every 4-6 hours.

ie max 1200mg per day.

how many has he taken exactly? 200mg over the max daily dosage? is that what you meant... if so, that's not cause for concern.

TonariNoTotoro · 03/09/2010 01:22

what the other's said - how much exactly has he had in the last 12 - 24 hours?

moragbellingham · 03/09/2010 12:19

Don't be concerned about a one off.

moragbellingham · 03/09/2010 12:24

Max is slightly higher than 1200mg anyway.

cass66 · 03/09/2010 20:36

actually the max is 2400mg in 24 hrs, a lot higher than what is on the info sheets. so he should be OK if you mean he's taken 200mg extra. watch out for stomach pains...

delusionsofadequacy · 03/09/2010 20:36

the maximum daily dose is 2.4g (according to the bnf) so so long as he has had less than tht he is ok (unless he has kidney problems which it can make worse at high doses).

SpeedyGonzalez · 03/09/2010 22:54

Thanks for your replies everyone. He had taken 1400 mg in 18 hours - apple for lack of clarity. I did have a feeling that that wasn't a real cause for concern, but 'a feeling' isn't really a satisfactory way to reassure someone over medical matters!

Cheers again.
