DD (4) - second night crying because her bottom hurts

I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this. She seems to do a poo just before bathtime and some time after she gets out of the bath she starts complaining that the inside of her bottom hurts and she wakes up crying with pain. There's nothing I can see, she says it's not itchy and it doesn't hurt while she's doing a poo.

Do worms hurt? I thought they were just itchy. I also thought of piles but that would hurt while doing a poo too, wouldn't it?

Any ideas?

i think they do hurt, i've definitely seen it mentioned on here before.

NonnoMum · 29/08/2010 21:40

Er - are you sure it's her back bottom? My DD (5) sometimes cries about having a sore bottom when she has been having, erm, a bit of a fiddle...

Sorry if that's no help, but sometimes they don't have the words to describe what's going on...

usualsuspect · 29/08/2010 21:43

Sounds like it could be worms

vacaloca · 29/08/2010 21:43

No, she definitely points to her anus and she says it's inside.

I'll go google worms (oh god) to see about it hurting.

Take a torch and go exploring in a couple of hours - if there are worms, then they will be out to play then. Very common.

we get this with ds1 and dd. thought it might be because they haven't wiped properly and it's a type of rash thing. they say it hurts inside as well. have you checked to see if there's a slight cut or something that is stinging.

vacaloca · 29/08/2010 21:49

I can't find anything about pain with worms, other than cramps and abdominal pain. I really can't see anything wrong with her bottom, it's clean and not sore in any way.

If she's only four, might she not yet know 'itchy'? She might be using the word 'hurt' because she doesn't know how else to describe it.
You have to be lucky to catch the worms I've found. DD has been complaining for the last few days but like you, I couldn't see any worms. Today I decided to give us all the worming tablet to be on the safe side and then sure enough, tonight I saw one worm.

Does she mention it in the morning at all or is it mainly late afternoon/early evening?

Please try not to freak about 'worms'. I know I did the first time DS got them but you can clear them up really easily and no one needs to know.

You'll find all the instructions for what to do on the internet (ie, washing all towels, bed linens, flannels, pajamas, bath toys etc.) The tablets (one tiny tablet for each member of the family) kill the worms but not the eggs hence the need to wash everything thoroughly.

it's a mystery to us as well. usually if I just give it a quick wipe with wet wipe and put a bit of sudocrem on it seems to do the trick (whether it's doing anything or it just goes by itself, no idea) but a couple of weeks ago ds1 was crying with pain and nothing worked. he does complain of tummy aches quite a lot as well, but have taken him to the drs who did urine test and nothing showed. sorry, not much help. i thought maybe with ds it could be a little cut just inside that keeps opening up?

vacaloca · 29/08/2010 22:05

She's got quite good vocabulary and she would say if it was itchy - she has before, but she's adamant this is not itchy and it only hurts on the inside.

I've found some condition called proctalgia fugax which is like spams of the anal muscle which happen for a period of time in the night and then it disappears during the day. The way she behaves this could be a possibility. If she has the same tomorrow night I think I'll take her to the doctor and she what they say.

I'll watch out for worms too, though I have been for the last couple of days. Would they show in the poo or do I need to catch them in the night or early morning?

The warmth of the bath seems to make the itchy worse. My son had them this year ( I was mortified at first). I couldn't spot any and I did midnight checks with a torch. Oh the glamour! But I saw one wormy after he had the meds and the following poo came.

I think I'd treat it as worms.

Could be her bottom hurts due to constipation and it stretching the anus area?

notyummy · 29/08/2010 22:10

Would treat as worms as well. Have a look with a torch post 10pm. Pretty gross but v common.

fishingfilly · 29/08/2010 23:08

my ds was the same - said his bottom was itcy and burning and he was scratching constantly at bedtime.

Apparently worms come out at night time they like the dark and warmth.

I waited till I went to bed and pulled down him PJ Pants (he wasnt quit night dry then)and held my mobile and could see one. In morning I took off his PJ pants and he bent over the bed and there were some more - they just look like small threads of cotton at first I thought they were strands from his pants or sheet

go to doctors and get the whole family treated

nelliesmum · 29/08/2010 23:11

Don't need to go to doctors. Pharmacist will give you a family pack of pills, can't remember the name but cost is about £7. You need to take them again in a fortnight. Better than the nasty raspberry flavoured stuff we had as kids...yuck!

loopylou6 · 31/08/2010 11:19

Absolutely deffo worms. We had this with DD it was awful she would literally be bouncing round screaming, it was horrendous Sad

Treated her with worm meds and a few days later when she had a poo it was purely infested She was very impressed tho and said it would be mean to flush the 'wormys' and could she keep them in a jar on her windowsill Shock

PS when you treat her, also treat everyone in the house even if you have no symptoms.

Uurgh. They're gross.

I reckon it sounds like worms to me. If she's itching at night (asleep therefore not aware of it) then she could be scratching and making herself sore.

Some pharmacies (lots of co-op ones) are able to do worm tabs on scrip now via the pharmacist so it could well not cost a penny.

Good luck!

vacaloca · 31/08/2010 20:38

Quick update. Last night she was the same and this time she finally said it was itchy rather than painful. I sneaked up with a torch but couldn't see anything (thank god). Been to the chemists today and we've all taken the stuff.

Do I really need to wash towels, bed clothes, pyjamas, etc. daily for a while?

OP posts:

oh god. this probably means that's what our ds has too as it's the same symptoms. yuk! in which case this has been happening on and off for ages so god knows what's going on up there. is there any prob taking the tablets if there aren't any worms? perhaps should worm all the kids every so often like dogs. good luck vacaloca.

thanks pixieonaleaf. just had a look on website to see if okay to use when breastfeeding and seems its okay. really annoyed with dr. have been about three times with his stomach aches and bum pain etc and even mentioned worms (he's also REALLY skinny, but is always hungry, although that prob is a myth) but anyway, it wasn't even considered.

loopylou6 · 01/09/2010 10:53

Yup pixie, still very much alive Grin
