The treatment for fibroids

I was diagnosed with fibroids earlier this year. I am not keen on surgery as I have had three caesarean sections, so initially I was against being referred to a gynaecologist. However, I have now discovered that it is possible to have injections to shrink the fibroids, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience of this and the side effects?

Not to my knowledge. Fibroids are hormonally driven so to shrink you generally have to stop your hormonal cycle - menopause does this naturally. You change have myomectomies performed without cuttign through the uterus. What symptoms do you have from them?

I had a pineapple sized fibroid several years ago. I did have it surgically removed, but for several months beforehand I had injections - these, if memory serves me well, was to stop them growing anymore and help with the bleeding, whilst I waited for the operation.

They seemed to mimic the menopause (I had hot sweats that's fore sure, and the bleeding was less). I am pretty sure you can't have these injections on a permanent basis but somebody more knowledgable than me will come along and tell you.

I believe you can have a kind of abrasion treatment which saves the need for the knife. Again, I did a lot of research when I had fibroids years ago so memory a bit rusty.

I would go and see the gynae anyway - no harm in it!! Good luck!

Thank you for your information. I do have very heavy periods and I am on medication for that. My womb is extended to my left hand side and so before a period, the womb rests on the nerve which can cause some discomfort in my leg.

i have 2 fibroids embedded in the wall of the uterus, rather than in the uterus. It depends what sort of fibroids you have. Some consultants will remove them if they are just hanging in the uterus but if they are embedded i was recommended that it was safer to have a hysterectomy as removal could cause too much bleddeing. What age are you. They often let nature take its course and wait to see if they shrink at menopause.
