Calpol and Nurofen - decrease in age of usage

Can any one please explain why there has been a decrease in the age of usage on these two products?

I've only just noticed that Calpol can now be given at 2 months. Do you think this is because Nurofen have now reduced their product minimum age limit to 3 months?

Just seems strange to me and wondered what others thought?

Calpol has been able to be given at two months for some time, but I think really it's more for pain relief following immunisation, at least I think that's the advice (or was) on the box. No idea about Nurofen.

Both licences have recently been amended. Calpol can now be given to infants over 2 months provided they are over 4kg and were not premature. Nurofen is now licensed for infants from 3 months who weigh more than 5 kg. This is for pain and fever, not necessarily caused by immunisation.

AFAIK, these products have always been considered safe for babies this age, but the dose needs to be weight-adjusted. The companies have presumably recently applied to the regulator for the changes.

I think the Calpol change came first and it is very likely that this prompted Crookes Healthcare to seek a change to the Nurofen product licence.
